I'm only one day away from being on my plane to the Netherlands!
I'm going to be leaving on January 3rd from the Vancouver Airport (flight leaves bloody early so I'm camping out in the airport for the night) and after a 4 hour layover in Seattle I'll be on my way to Amsterdam, arriving in the morning on January 4th, their time. I'll then be taking a train down to Maastricht, in the southern part of the country, to meet up with my buddy Joel. He lives in Maastricht, goes to school there, and I'll be staying with him and his roommates. That'll be my base of operations of sorts, from which I can travel to Germany, Belgium, maybe France or Britain, details to be worked out upon arrival. I come home on February 13th, 5 weeks and a few days later!
Right now I'm trying to remember everything that I need to pack, and trying to figure out what I DON'T need. Keeping my bags light is quite a challenge, it turns out, but I will definitely want lots of room in my bags for bringing stuff home.
This is my first trip abroad, so I'm really excited and a little nervous about it, but I really enjoy travel and striking out on my own, so this is a chance to spread the wings and fly for a while. I'm really glad that my friend will be there to help me out though, because there's so much I don't know about travel and Europe and things that I will have questions about while I'm there. They're also doing me a big favor by letting me stay with them, as that will help keep this trip within my tight budget. So I'm looking forward to this because in a way its a move of independance for myself, but I'll still have friends to help me along when I need it, and I know I will. It's kind of "Europe for Dummies" in a way 😊 A tutorial for future trips, perhaps?
Wish me luck, I hope I find the right train 0_o
