First sight of NY
These are crappy shots but I think I have been too excited to even try to take good pictures! Day 80- Washington
We aren't mad...we had to move on today as there seemed to be no vacant rooms in NY..even in New Jersey! And according to Nora there are no vacancies in youth hostels till the end of October! So..when you come... get your acts together and don't be like us. Plan ahead and book!!!
Actually, I wasn't worried as I am returning to NY for about five days at the beginning of next month as I have four nights booked at the Met! The season doesn't start till then. An there will be a few matinees and other slots for more shows.
I had such a pleasant day yesterday walking all around midtown and the theatre district and up to Central Park, just getting the feel of the city. It is such a great city to walk around. With the fantastic range of shows to see I had to make a choice and opted for "South Pacific" in the Vivien Beaumont theatre at the Lincoln Centre, partly because I wanted to see something in a newer facility and anyway I love Sp and have even performed in it . It's one of the great Rodgers And
Second sight
On the corner as I emerged from the train from Boston at Penn Stationon 8th Avenue! Just there waiting... Hammerstein classics. And it did not let me down. Probably the best musical performance I have ever attended. They could really sing and dance in a way I have never seen before! I sang all the way back to my hotel as I walked down Broadway to 42nd Street!!! Really! and Truly! I am not lying.
I am rather pleased with myself as I (unaided) chose two shows that Liz, our family expert and critic nominated and had the other two on the list for later.
This morning dawned as a clear blue day, after the rain of yesterday so I decided that the priority was the Empire State Building. I walked down 8th Avenue to Penn Station to the palatial central post office to post a whole lot of books and unneeded clothes home (my fifth such parcel). Then , there it was!( The Empire State!) It took about an hour to be wrangled through four different rope mazes before I reached the 82nd floor. That is the one faked in "On the Town" (despite the fact that Gene Kelly was a pioneer of On Location filming) and actually in "An Affair to Remember" and "Sleepless in Seattle".
It is open to the air. There are even some pigeons up there to annoy me! If you pay extra to go to level 102 you are inside glass.
I had planned to see two shows today but there was a glitch with accommodation. I was amazed, considering the price, the number of families who come in to go to the baseball ( and book out all the accommodation!) . So, in a hurry to take my luggage back to Penn Station and book a train to Washington I bought a ticket to "Grease" for the matinee at one of the nearest theatres then went off to join Connie and Nora. They were really frustrated at the lack of accommodation but I said that Washington was the best option, so they got Tickets for Grease too and then at 6pm afterr the show we took the train here...31/2 hours. Accommodation is much cheaper here.
