So the travel blog finally begins again.. I’m on the Greyhound, about to leave for Lake Louise!
I had the worst night’s sleep last night. It was 30+ degrees yesterday and last night seemed about the same, so so hot in the hostel room. We had the air con on, but I think once there are three people sleeping in a small room, there’s not much you can do to keep the heat at bay. I do love that hostel though, and will definitely be staying there whenever I return to Vancouver.
I met a nice English girl named Sarah, who had just spent 7 months working in Banff.
I woke up at 4 this morning, after a good hour of sleep (kill me now) and made my way to the Greyhound. I’ve got the back seat all to myself, hope it stays that way! Next to my window someone has written “Suddenly it’s going to dawn on you! The Greyhound is HELL”. Considering I’ve bought a 60 day pass, I really hope it’s not that bad!!
Yesterday was Vanessa’s 21st birthday. We went to see Cirque Du Soleil - Corteo. It was a real let down. I
love Cirque more than any other show in the world, but this particular production was such a letdown. The whole time I was just waiting for something exciting to happen, but it never seemed to take off. I hated the fact that I was so unimpressed with the show, because usually I can’t wipe the smile off my face. I felt better when Vanessa was also unimpressed with it. Erin liked it though, so maybe Vanessa and I are hard to please
We then went on a cruise of False Creek on as rainbow coloured boat, then went to Vanessa’s favourite restaurant, Wet Spot.
So I’ve finally arrived in Lake Louise. The drive was actually pretty bearable. I managed to keep the back seat to myself, and actually lied down to sleep. I took Sarah’s advice and pretended to be asleep when we stopped, so people wouldn’t wake me to ask to sit down. Nice! I bet the Greyhound gods will get me though, and tomorrow I’ll be stuck next to a crying baby on the way to Calgary.
The hostel seems nice. The room is two floors high, and I’m on the top bunk of the top floor. Holy fear of heights! You should see the staircase, no way I’m having anything to drink tonight, it’ll be hard enough getting down it without breaking a leg. The power went out in the hostel while I was checking in, so nothing is working. It’s still light outside though, so that’s where I am. I’m getting eaten alive by mozzies, will have to get some insect repellant I guess. Tomorrow I’m going to go on a hike to lake Louise, then the girl at the front desk suggested that I hitchhike to this other Lake, Moraine Lake, that’s supposed to be even prettier than Louise. Will see if I get the guts up to hitch hike! She said there is a shuttle bus, but it’s not very regular. Otherwise it’s 30kms to walk there and back.
Dragging my bags from the bus station to the hostel I realised that although I feel I was ruthless with my packing (I threw away stuff and left quite a lot in a storage locker in Burnaby) I still have a shitload of stuff. Going to have to get even more ruthless I think, especially if I’m going to be buying stuff in the US and at Edmonton Mall!
Have run into trouble with money again, because I’m not working I’m going to refrain from using my Canadian credit card for a while, cos I won’t be able to pay it off. My Australian credit card expired today, mum sent it to Tom’s place on Friday, so now I just have to wait for it. I was going to try to transfer some funds over to my travel Visa from Aus, but because the power has gone down I can’t get access to the internet. It’ll all work out, it has to!
I might go get an early night, so I can wake up super early in the morning to do all this hiking and stuff. Might also be a good idea to get into bed before it’s completely dark.. Or else there’s absolutely no way I’m getting up those stairs! Tomorrow it’s Canada Day (say Canada Day 5 times fast and tell me you don’t feel like a twat) and they’re having activities of some sort here, so might have to check those out too. My bus is at 4, so we’ll see how much of this I actually get done!
