Saturday 26th April:
Westward towards Exmouth, we just got off the dirt road before the rain started. Into the hospital to get the cook fixed up. Then fill up the food and fuel and head around to the west side of the cape to Ningaloo Reef. Wow, what a place. Turquoise water and coral reef right at your door. Picked a nice camp area (Neds Camp). Set-up camp and started fishing. Two nice sized Trevally before sunset. Next day put the boat in tried to find some more fish, but looks like they had all gone away. Tried again the next day and ended up with one or two nice sized Spangled Emperor each day. Leonie caught the most, of course. Even got the biggest one at 63cm long. Caught lots of sharks and saw even more. Snorkeled at the Oyster Stacks, once again Wow.
Monday 5th May:
Out of Ningaloo Reef and south to the Exmouth Gulf. Found a secluded camp spot right on the waters edge. Very soft sand, hope we don’t get bogged. Fished from the shore and caught every shark in the Gulf. Lost lots of tackle on these nasty fish. Put the boat in and tried
the high tide further south in the Gulf. Almost the same result. Caught a 1.6m Shovel Nose Shark.
Thursday 8th May:
Off to Wyloo Station to fossick for Amethyst Crystals. Found the pig-headed caretaker who would not let us onto the lease. Off to Onslow to see what old Onslow is all about. Bad luck, the road is still washed out. That was a 80km drive in to find this out then an 80km drive back out again.
Dam! Don’t ya just hate these Autumn days. 34degrees during the day and down to 17 at night. Oh for a rainy, cold and windy Sydney day. Ha ha.
Saturday 10th May:
Into Karratha to buy new tyres for the trailer. The outback roads have worn them out. What a place, $1500.00 per week to stay in a Transportable ‘Donga’. Plenty of jobs but no accommodation??? $100,000.00 per year to drive a mine truck.
Checked out Dampier and its fishin’ spots.
Monday 12th May: Quick drink at the Whim Creek Hotel and then off to Balla Balla to fish for mud crabs. Met at the creek by Terry and Shirley who had just cooked a mud crab and wanted to know if
we would like it. Is the Pope a Catholic? Fished for days and had crab each day and for days after. Caught a variety of fish including Hairtail, Chinaman Cod, Black-tipped reef shark and Cobbler
Monday 19th May:
Into Cape Keraudren to camp. Not a bad place, some Threadfin Salmon around.
Next day off to 80mile beach. Just had to see it, beautiful whit sandy beach and milky-white water. Too many people. It seems like the retirement capital of W.A.
Wednesday 21st May:
Into Broome to fill-up the fuel and the belly. Off to Middle Lagoon in the Beagle Bay area. Overnight at Barred Creek, millions of mozzies at sunset and trillions of sand flies at sunrise. Middle Lagoon is a beautiful little bay on the west coast of Cape Leveque. Fished with a little success for a few days. Then on to Cape Leveque. Wow! Nice spot, right on the northern tip of the Cape. No camp sites available looks like we will have to stay in one of their ‘Beach Shelters’. A small shade-house right on the beach with palm leaves on the roof and sides, a cold shower in one corner and a table and chairs. Very
close to heaven.
Back to Broome to top-up the fuel and belly, again. Met-up with Cassie, Grant and Maybi(the dog). Phone call from PK on Troughton Island. Stayed at the Broome Bird Observatory - interesting. Then on to Telegraph Pool on the mighty Fitzroy River for a spot of fresh-water Barra fishin’. Leonie caught a 68cm Barra and I caught every other species of fish kown to man.
Headed further upstream to Myroodah Crossing. Fished for Barra and caught a croc - impossible to land. Visited the local Aboriginal Community. I went to visit the Clinic and Leonie visited the school. Got a great welcome at the school. They wanted Leonie to stay and fill a vacancy they had. Bad luck, we are on holidays. Just got out of there and it started to rain. Don’t want to get stuck on those clay roads in the wet. Into Kununurra for food and fuel then out to the Lower Ord River to try for Barra, again. Found a great camp spot at the Mambi Island Boat Ramp. Explored about 20km of the river and only caught an undersized Barra, Freshwater Sharks, Crocs and Catfish.
Thursday 12th June:
Leonie’s Birthday.
Saturday 14th
June:
Keep River National Park, met a German tourist and his girl trying to bludge petrol. Eastward into the Northern Territory and visited the Flora River Nature Park. What a beautiful river. Bad timing however as the National Parks mob were about to start a Fauna Survey.
Monday 16th June:
Into Katherine, just had to stop at the tackle shop. Everything was on special. Further north to Woolianna on the Daly River to try again for the elusive Barra. Caught more of these Freshwater Sharks on live baits. They are not real happy about coming to the boat for hook extractions.

Not missing any fish at home
There are reports of tailer up to 4 kilo in the lake so I went out for an early morning fish. I had pilchards and squid heads out on some good sized tackle ready for some fun. The only things I caught were on the itty bitty jig hooks while trying to get some bait fish. I got a little whiting and put him out with a hook just behind the head. He came back in missing the back half. Nugger I put the hook in the wrong end. I also got a plate sized bream on the tiny little jig hooks. It was a beautiful sunrise, but no tailer, no sharks, no barra, no crocs and 12 degrees.
