Phoenix to Telluride

Saturday May 31st, 2008
Well…by 9pm we finally hit the road. Nothing like getting a late start; about 12 hours late. We drove to Flagstaff and met our first (hopefully our last) police officer. Making a wrong turn down a one-way at 11:30 on a Saturday night in a college town, in front of a cop, usually brings unwanted attention. An “I’m sorry, sir. We’re not from around here,” and we were off to Beaver St. Brewery for quick brew before hitting the road again.

We’re doing this on a budget, so we slept in the car along Highway 89, somewhere between Flagstaff and Page. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and scenic northern view; only 27 miles from The Grand Canyon - so close, yet so far; we didn’t go. On our way north, we took some cool pictures of Monument Valley too. Our next stop was in Four Corners, USA. In case you forgot, it’s Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. We had to be original, so you’ll see our skillful way that we touched all four states at once…very graceful. The memories justify the $6 we paid to take those pictures!

2 pm Sunday and we finally arrived in Telluride…it was a spectacular view coming into town! After a short stop at the visitor’s center we decided on a “Primitive” campsite at the east end of town. The site really was not that primitive; it had running water, flushing toilets, and quarter showers, $2 for 5 minutes of hot water! We set up camp and tried to acclimate to the altitude; as we found out later by doing all the wrong things…drank caffeine, alcohol, river water, and exercised too quickly. It all worked out fine anyway; they don’t know what they’re talking about! We ran a 6 mile river trail run and it was during the run that Rob decided he was going to move to Telluride. (More on this later). Also on that run Jen was too dehydrated to care; she was drinking the muddy river water.

A super quick shower later, we drove 2 blocks to the market to grab dinner. Again, we’re on a budget here so a ½ price tuna sandwich was a great find! After dinner, we found a local brewery, Smuggler’s, and settled in at the bar for a beer (or 2), there is

Just taking a break
no budget when it comes to hydrating. People were laid back and easy to talk to. We struck up conversations with a few locals and ended the evening with a tour of the brewery in the basement. It was a long day, so we crashed by 10:30. A great day!

It's great to hear from you!!
OK-hopefully I did this right...despite working for a high tech market research firm for 7 years, I have never blogged, don't know how...am actually quite lost. Glad to hear you guys are not lost! This blog is such a great idea!! What better way to document your adventures and keep us all posted. I know you will have a blast. You'll probably be ready to rip eachothers hair out at some point....driving for that long. I'd just rip out my own hair out :) But I know it will be great to see family and explore the country together. We miss you and will be thinking of you. Be safe! Love ya!! Erin
