Thai dinner
Have I already mentioned that traveling is really tiring? Well it is! Therefore it was time for sleeping most of the morning and then spend the afternoon at a nice cafe talking and reading.
In the evening we were picked up by Tai. Together we went to yet another friend from work called Joe. His wife's just had a baby about a month ago and we were invited to go and have a look at it. It's Joe's second child and a really adorable little baby boy. I thought that we'd just go by, look at the baby, have a drink and chat for a bit. But it turned out that many people like his sister with her husband and other friends were invited too.
When we got there people were busy in the kitchen. None of them spoke English. I tried to offer my help but they just sent me away. I wanted to at least stay for a while and see how they prepare the meal. I think we all felt a bit insecure about the situation and kept smiling at each other. I'm sure most of you know that I don't spend more
time in the kitchen than necessary but this time I found it really fascinating. They had so many different foods there and I had no clue what they were going to make.
When all the guests had arrived it was time to sit down on a blanket on the porch. We had a hot pot. K said it's like a Thai style fondue. They boiled bouillon and then added all sorts of vegetables, fish, pork, noodles... It was really good 😊
No idea how many times I had to reposition my legs while we sat on the floor. I'm simply not used to sitting cross-legged for hours. Our hosts started to bring cushions and started to apologize for making me sit on the ground. But I really didn't mind to sit on the floor in contrary. I thought it was really nice to eat like this but what can I say, I'm an office person. That evening I thought that spending so many hours on a chair in front of a PC makes you very stiff.
After the meal Joe took his guitar and harmonica and started to play for a bit. We laughed a lot that
night and K had a lot of translating to do for none of them speaks much English except Joe's sister. I cannot put in words how much I enjoyed that evening. The company of all these hearty people was so nice. They even invited me to stay with them for Songkran (Thai new year) although they hardly knew me.
K and I would have liked to stay longer but we had to leave at 10pm and go to the airport in order to meet K's friends from university who arrived that night from Bangkok. This trip was not on our schedule but this week one of K's friends from uni called and said that another one of their friends is getting married on Sunday. K and the groom are really good friends but have lost touch while K studied in Europe for four years and he didn't invite him because he didn't know that K was back in Thailand. What a coincidence that we were in Chiang Mai just then.
We were all picked up and brought to Lampang which is about an hour east of Chiang Mai. It was really nice to see K greet his friends. They have finished uni ten years ago and some of them haven't seen each other since. They looked at one another laughing about how much some of them have changed. The whole way to Lampang they were talking about old times. They were all so excited about their reunion. That reminds me that I finished High School in Switzerland nearly 10 years ago. Gosh, time passes so fast 😞
We arrived in Lampang around 1am and I went straight to bed whilst the guys stayed up most of the night.
