Steve:
We decided to do the Grand Canyon as a day trip from Vegas this meant that the only bit we could reach in a day was Grand Canyon West which is not part of the National Park but owned by the local Indian tribe. It is however the home of the Skywalk! Its a bit of a strange up though as they are just in it for the money. You have to pay $20 for parking, $30 for a hop on hop off bus pass (even though there are only 2 look out posts) and then $30 to go on the skywalk. The food is a complete rip-off as well. There are no boards or signs explaining how the canyon came to be or anything about the tribe's culture or history. They literally get you in and then get you out! At the moment they are attempting to extend their airport to take larger passenger planes and are building a 4 star hotel there so obviously need the money.
My advice to anyone going is to drive out to the main park entrance - its another 3 hours drive but as its National Park will be much better
run!
That said the Canyon is incredible, you just can't take in its vastness and you won't remember the money you spent in a years time! The skywalk was brilliant but pretty freaky, Kate held onto the side wall the whole way round! We have no pictures of us on it sadly as you are not allowed a camera on their as they take pictures for a you and then try and charge you for them. Still it was brilliant!
It is one thing you have to see in your lifetime and definitely worth the drive out to it from Vegas!
