Yesterday 7 of us took a few cabs over to the mosques. We only saw hagia sophia from the outside because it is a museum and we will be returning later to go inside. We did, however, go inside the blue mosque and the bazaar. This seemed to be a very touristy area. Most all of the vendors spoke english and would say things like "come inside please" and if you ignored them they would respond again with "i need your money." Not particularly poverty-stricken people, but I suppose it got them attention. We did make friends with a young police officer working on his english. We asked him if we could sit in on a mosque worship and he allowed us to behind a wooden gate which was set up inside. Anyhow, here are some pictures of that. On the way back the other cab with 3 of our friends took them for a loop with the ending fair being 37 lira. Our cab fair was only about 14 lira. I suppose we got our first taste of tourism and a bit of scamming on the side.
I'm still have a few issues with jet lag and take a nap
around 5pm every afternoon but then wake up again and can't sleep until about 4 am. Very weird schedule, but for the time being it isn't bothering me much. Mosque-ing
The Blue Mosque is really pretty! I didn't expect such wide-open spaces in it; I guess I figured it would be like the cathedrals in Europe, all cramped and dark. Have you had any problems with people being rude or scary?
