Joking with Guests...
Terry The Toll Taker! Gotta make da rent money!!! This is the ATTITUDE I have with most guests...It is all about FUN!!! Hola,
Como estas? I hope this finds you doing well? All is good here in Costa Rica. It is hard to believe that well over a year has past since I first arrived. I have learned a lot, seen a lot but have not explored as much as I would have liked! In addition, I got my first critical review…now I use that term loosely. After going off on me, they were kind enough to follow-up with an apology and explanation! Personally, I feel this was a bit much however I thought I would share the comment & apology and elaborate on the points noted by my harshest critic! I will post their comments & apology on my previous entry (http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/TravlinTerry/).
SLAM:
Dude, do you people let their dogs run wild in the USA? If you think Costa Rica is the third world you haven't been to the real third world. How do you feel about a so called third world having a higher life expectancy than the US and more accessible health care? Your attitude and comments are not doing your B & B any service as we have decided we'd rather stick needles in our eyes than meet someone who has the attitude that you portray in your blog. Maybe you should let Andrew do the writing as at least his are interesting. I dare you to publish this comment but doubt you will.
APOLOGY:
Sorry about the slam
Terry, sorry for slamming you so hard about your blog and the third world comment. I had just read another blog about Costa Rica that used the same term and was frustrated. I think we both know that Costa Rica is not the same as Darfur and despite some challenges it is a developing nation with tremendous infrastructure compared to most of Central and South America. No it isn't the states and yes you should have the dogs in a fenced area. I think that is what also bothered me. You must take care to protect your animals as they are like three year olds and can really harm themselves and/or others if not cared for properly. Pura Vida
While I appreciate the apology, the slam was a bit harsh! So this is where I will address the issues raised. I don’t know what Costa Rica the Nowlan-Dore family has visited…if indeed they have
More Play Time!
They miss being out and about! been here, however, the Costa Rica I have lived in for over a year now has elements of what I described! I must start off by CLARIFYING how my blog came to be. It started out as letters to my parents and friends describing my adventures here. I was not in any way shape or form doing a critical analysis of the mechanics that make up a 3rd world country. For those who don’t know me, I write off the top of my head, tongue and cheek! In addition, I am somewhat of a smart ... and when I ¨got attitude¨ you will know it!
As for free-range dogs…with the exception of gringo dogs…most are out and about…even in San Jose…or at least parts. I don’t know where they (Nolan-Dore) have visited…but it is as common as the sun rising circa 6 a.m. and setting at 6 p.m. In the past, I/we let out Osita & Reigna run for a few hours to get their play on…as do most others who have dogs. Costa Rican dogs are different from the ones up north. Born here, they seem to have a 6th sense about their hood and what they can
Sunset AVF Style...
One of many colors That can be seen at dusk! do and where they can go and return like chickens at sunset.
Costa Rica as a 3rd World Country, well again I am not known for my political commentary! I am just writing of my experiences. In discussions I have had with folks from all walks of life, there seems to be a consensus that 3rd world countries should be on a sliding scale, with Costa Rica being on the upper end. There is even a thought process that countries such as Darfur should be a 4th or even 5th world.
As far as my attitude…you have read something in that does not exist…and the content of your apology confirms that! One thing I have learned in my advanced years is to THINK before I SPEAK or RESPOND to something written. In the future I would advise you to respond to those who have ruffled your feathers and spare those of us who are to a degree innocent. At the very least wait till cooler heads prevail and you can avoid being nasty where it is unwarranted. Dramatics are best saved for the theatre, movies and TV shows. Yes, Andrew may be a far better writer and he appreciated the review…but I am not in a writing competition and for the record… I am a better person!!! (wink, wink)
As for you sticking pins in your eyes and not coming here…I think that is silly, but do whatcha gotta do! Apology accepted…but you lost the bet because I did publish your comments…just took me a bit to get around it. Sorry you have read into and misinterpreted my little stories…but just like a TV program you are not keen on, you can move on to next channel or turn the TV off.
In closing…RELAX, If indeed Pura Vida (Pure Life) is the Costa Rican motto…then don’t just SAY IT, LIVE IT!
Looking forward to seeing you around the upper end!

Old Guy's Response
Terry, All I can think of to comment about your critic is a passage from very old Ricky Nelson song title, 'Garden Party that goes," 'If you can't please everyone, then you've got to please yourself." We enjoy and appreciate the adventres you share with all of us who know you and honor you as a great and decent person. Don't be detered by negative jerks. Civility is in short supply these days. If the guy doesn't appreciate what you do, I suggest he just moves on and allow the rest of us to enjoy your sharing of your quest. Sam and Jane - Indianapolis, IN
