Qenqo is a very interesting Inca ruin, a small cave with 2 doorways, a window, altar, and chamber. Like many Inca structures, Qenqo is multi-purpose. It was a place of worship and making offerings (such as food, artwork, etc.). Offerings were placed in a small chamber and burned, if the fire was clean and burned quickly the offering was considered accepted by Pacha Mama (mother earth).
The other more interesting use for Qenqo was for surgery. Qenqo stays between -3 and 4 degrees celsius throughout the year, which is good for surgery. Both of us touched the altar (very cold) and it was very exciting to imagine surgeries occuring on that surface. The Incas did perform basic brain surgery to relieve pressure in the skull, mostly for injured warriors.
