Poland so far has been a fascinating country, and a country that we've been able to give real time to. We spent our first night in Zakopane, a favourite destination of Polish tourists for its accessibility to the high Tatras mountains. As we approached we entered a realm of intricately carved log houses, and small wooden churches against a backdrop of the craggy limestone mountains. We then cycled to Krakow, where we had the humbling and chilling experience of visiting Auschwitz, before heading to the least populated and least developed region in the south east of Poland, Podkarparckie, where Poland borders Slovakia and the Ukraine.
Poland in the southeast appears a country juxtaposed between centuries old and new. Frenzied road building and property development is taking place in anticipation of the Euro 2012 football cup against a backdrop of age old tradition.
It is not uncommon to see horses and carts in use, fields being hand cut with scythes, and a lone cow being escorted by it's owner to the best patch of grass. In the south and south eastern areas we have visited so far, the country remains very rural, with small scale farming remaining the norm. It appears that the people on the whole enjoy a high standard of living, although they may have little in the way of disposable income.

Most of Europe fell of the face of a map...
Hi, I've tried my hardest to help you guys restore your missing blog entries... can't believe they all disappeared like that, that's like taking a chunk out of your lives - and for the people sitting at their computer screens avidly following every step, or pedal rotation (hmm, not quite as poetic). Anyway, have done some freak manipulation of google caches to try and help you restore your 12(!) missing blog entries. I have also decided to email you the text personally as well, so expect a long and random email. Hopefully you can find the time to restore your blog to its former glory - cos we love it! Take care, Gx
