So today, we got up early for our first foray into the jungle. The morning began with a huge rain storm that we waited out before going. After the rain lightened up a bit, we climbed up and up to this small peak where there is an observation tower. I was a little hesitant to climb up this metal death trap while it was raining for fear of a lightning strike, but there seemed to be a lot of concrete between the metal stairs and the earth. Anyhow, once we got to the top of this 150 foot behemoth, we were among the tree tops. It was a little eerie since you could feel the tower sway with the wind, but overall felt safe. After a while of watching birds, our guide spotted a monkey - a wooley monkey. This thing was in a tree probably no more than 50 feet away or so. It was so cool to watch him jump from tree branch to tree branch looking for food. The three of us were very focused on the monkey and pretty much ignored our guide trying to point out other bird species. Geez, they must get a lot of bird watchers on these trips.

Anyhow, we returned to the lodge, had breakfast, and began your late morning hike. Now this was utter hell. The jungle is no place to be during the noon hours. I mean all the animals were taking it easy, so why weren't we. It was pretty unpleasant and I could really care less about this insect or this plant at this point. But it was still nice to have a guide take us all around and force us to learn. Anyhow, I was glad to get back to the lodge, have lunch, and begin our trip back to the Cloud Forest Lodge. I was really looking forward to that place since it was so comfortable. I mean it's really a retreat and I think after a hard 4 days on the Inca trail, I deserved to be pampered a bit. Besides, my nails are all dirty and long and I forgot to bring a nail clipper, so I'm biting them. AHHHHHHH! Where's civilization?!

I think we were all happy to make it back to the Cloud Forest Lodge. I couldn't have been happier and all I did was sit in the atrium and finished reading that book I started. I'll miss this place, but I'm too tired to stay up past 9PM to enjoy the place anymore.
