Erik, Q bar, Bangkok
Landing at Singapore airport was a surreal experience for us. Being the most expensive airport in the world it took us by surprise. Carpeted floors, shiny toilets... I mean we’d hardly seen any road markings for 4 months. We spent approximately 4 hours there, which was far from enough and we didn’t even find the 'free' swimming pool, maybe because we spent too much time at the 'free' Internet place (n.b. at Heathrow it’s one pound for 10 minutes!!!) Oh, and not to mention some good shopping too.

Then the treat continued as Singapore airlines flew us to Bangkok. Every seat had its own good sized private TV screen where you could choose from the latest films, your favourite series or just play some video games.
Enough promoting. I looted the toilet too.

When we got off the plane we did as most other backpackers did and headed straight for Khao san Rd. No surprises there, it was just what we’d heard; a paradise for low budget shopping, which we did a lot of.

We made a guest house called Green house our base just off Khao san. It was Erik, I and about 80 Israelis, nice people even though it’s hard to penetrate their little circles.

Bangkok had a lot to offer including several nice bars, which would have no problems surviving in London. We slipped in to a place called Bed supper club, seriously top notch. For 1000 baht/15 pounds/200 kr you could get a three course meal and the best service around. Sounds cheap, but it’s a lot of money here. We also hung out at Q bar, which was too much jokes… Too many Thai girls trying to copy my moves on the dance floor :o)

After about one week and much deliberation we decided to go down to Koh Samed island. We chose it because it was only 5 hours away from Bangkok and we had to wait a few more days for our visas for Lao and Cambodia. The decision not to head further down south to other islands (e.g. Koh phan ngan or Phuket) was because it felt like 'forced tourism' and our only reason to go there would be because everyone else did.

Koh Samed had all it promised and what we expected. Velvet beaches, crystal clear water and partying all night long, but it wasn’t really our cup of

Long island iced tea. It’s not hard to get fed up with British guys trying to score and Thai girls looking for “rich boyfriend”. Now don’t get me wrong, we absolutely enjoyed our short stay in Thailand but maybe it wasn’t what we were looking for on this trip.
Sure Thailand was a breeze but perhaps better suited to a 2 week holiday.
