In winter the argentina chile andes pass of los libertores (i think??) is notoriously difficult to cross due to bad weather. thousands of trucks were stranded a week ago due to crippling snows etc. what a time to cross!!! We ended up spending a whole day on one bus waiting in a place called uspallata and then returned to mendoza. the next day the clouds had cleared and we went for it and made it over to chile. the crossing was extremly cold, i think you get up to 4000m and the border guys are extremly thorough in checking all your stuff due to the lack of some diseases in chile i.e. no fruit etc. so plenty of standing about in in appropriate winter weather gear. (and els north face waterproof is no more...booo hooo. it fell foul of an over zealous gas fire in a bar in mendoza. with an entire shoulder melted, so it went in the bin).

anyway, its good to be in here in chile for a short while and near the sad end of the s.a. leg of our trip, though abs can´t wait to get to an english speaking country where she will do all the talking (apparently)!!
