Greetings from Munich! I just arrived at 10:30 today, 4:30a.m. your time. I haven't done too much besides walk around the downtown core yet, because I was busy sleeping after the flight! I did meet some cool people already, one from Munich and an Aussie. My first real stop is in Venice, so I'll have more to talk about once I get started on my tour. As promised, here's my basic itinerary:

June 10 - departure
June 11 - arrival in Munich
June 12-14 - Venice
June 15-17 - Rome
June 18 - Florence
June 19-20 - La Spezia
June 21-23 - Nice
June 24-26 - Lauterbrunnen
June 27-29 - Munich
June 30 to July 28 - Vienna (exchange program)
July 29 - departure from Vienna & arrival in Ottawa

Here's a basic breakdown of how it works:
From June 10th to June 29th, I'll be traveling by bus with Busabout (www.busabout.com - Southern Loop for a map). The bus travels between major cities and drops me off at hostels there, usually where I'll be staying. From there I'm free to do whatever I want until I catch the next bus, which comes every couple of days. So given that I'm only spending two and a half weeks traveling before I settle down a bit in Vienna, this is basically going to be a snapshot tour of Europe. I haven't planned anything definitively yet (partly out of design and partly due to laziness), but you can expect some of the typical postcard photos... and at the very least I'll photoshop myself into pictures of famous monuments!

For the 4 weeks I spend in Vienna, I'll be involved in a clinical exchange at Vienna General Hospital in the Neurosurgery department. Hopefully I'll be observing some cool stuff and if I'm lucky they'll let me help out in the procedures! (doesn't that make you question the credibility of medical care now?). I'll be staying at a huge hostel in Vienna with lots of other international medical students, so it'll definitely be a good time. There's some sort of social programme prepared for us and I'm planning on spending several weekends in different parts of Austria and also one in Prague. All in all, I'm going to try and go with the flow, which is somewhat against my nature, but I think it's the best way to experience Europe in this situation.

Feel free to send me emails and I think you can also post comments on this site. So if you have any suggestions of places to go, things to see, please post!

You should do the New Munich Free Walking Tour....it's a tour of Munich...and you walk around.....and it's free. Who knew? It starts in Marienplatz (one of the main plazas) around 10.45 or 11.45 i think every morning...and the guides wear red shirts. And definitely go to the Hofbrauhaus.

I don't know if you'll get this before you leave Munich, but you simply MUST go have a beer at Hofbrauhaus. It's an experience

Hi Carol, I hope I bring back some good memories for you. I'm excited to get to Prague in July. I've heard nothing but good things about it from the people I've met traveling! I have a couple of friends from med school who I'm meeting there.
