Edit Blog Post
Next time I update this blog all I will talk about is surfing so thought I would update on bits and bobs that we have been doing here in Sydney.
As you all know I have been working as a vet nurse/receptionist here in Surry Hills, Sydney for the last 7wks and I have decided to cut it short by a few weeks (was supposed to do 10wks) as the job isn't really what I was looking for (not much nursing!!!!) and David and I just want to get back on the road and have lots more fun whilst we are out here!!
Anyway, David got a new tattoo done here, about time for him- its been a while. He got a Japanese writing tattoo meaning 'a hard road travelled' ... he hopes!! on the inside of his arm. I was thinking about getting one but as I have only just decided to get one its too late as we are too close to our surf trip (next Monday) and the salt water would irritate the skin. Maybe when I get home... and when I pluck up the courage. So maybe never then !!
After new year I got a
nasty cold and so wasn't up to doing much, but after recently hearing about six Legionnaires disease cases, thought to have been spred in the Circular Quay area on New years Eve (where we were!) I felt like I shouldn't really have complained much!
You all probably know on occasion I smoked, especially when drinking- well you will all be pleased to know that I have kept to my New Years Resolution of quiting. Its now been 24 days without a single puff.. bravo me!! David is weak and admits it although he has cut down a little. Anyone else kept to their New year Resolution??? would like to hear them!
On my days off work we have done alot of walking around the Darling Harbour, Circular Quay and the Rocks as its such a nice and refreshing place to be. There is an outdoor bar and BBQ in the harbour- a favourite of ours as its cheap, great food and has a fab view over the beautiful harbour. The place is so well kept in this area- you forget your in a major city.
The Rocks has a really sweet market ubder the bridge that sells proper Aussie
souvenirs and bits and bobs- and none of it is tacky (unlike most aussie souvenirs). Its nice to walk around there, and thats where we bought our spray paint painting of aboriginal culture/uluru in Australia. Can't really explain it well but the artist was amazing the the painting is a really good memory of our experience here. We have also been spending some time on the rooftop of a pub that over-looks the opera house- you wouldn't get a view like this in a Harefield pub thats for sure!!
One day we took a trip to Palm beach aka Home and Aways 'Summer Bay'. It took us 2 hrs by bus to get there, but well worth it. The beach was gorgeous although windy and the harbour just around the corner was so pretty and livable! As we both sat on a bench over looking the harbour we had a discussion about how we could picture friends and family living in a place like this- Dad could have his boat, diving and plenty of work, mum could have her dream picturesque harbour, walks along this peaceful settings, beautiful little house on a hill over looking both harbour and ocean with
my work
sorry very boring but had to add to remind myself! fab sunsets and horses in a small stables nearby. Gem, you would just love every bit of it. Anyway yeh so it was nice. We must have just sat there for about an hour gazing and chilling in the tranquility of it. There was even little boat taxis off the jetty to private islands- very flash- I'am sure their not cheap!!
We forgot our camera that day but managed to use our mobiles to take a picture of the 'Summer Bay' sign at the surf club. It is an actual surf and life saving club that runs daily, although the sign is obviously fake- it has the names of the lifegards on duty and under management it says A. Stewart- how funny!
We have also treated ourselves to a ride on the 'Oz Jet', which is a speed boat that thrashes around the harbour, doing spins, jumps over waves and getting you soaked!! Very thrilling experience... looking forward to more of those in the near future!
Oh, we went to Taronga Zoo too and saw some very happy animals, which is unusual for zoos. We had to get on a ferry to get to the zoo, which is on
Darling Harbour
On Australia Day morning- hence getting busy! the other side of Circular Quay and from there you get awesome views of the harbour bridge and opera house horizon. Being kids we waited for quite a while to see the sealion show, which was funny hehe.
We have also been naughty and spent some of our budget on some new surf clothes for our trip... "well we need it!" I keep telling myself.
Other than that we have eaten out quite abit (mostly cheap food courts) and seen many films at the cinema as we have done just about everything we want to do in Sydney now! I must say 'Apocalypto' is a great film even though I wasn't keen to watch it as it is sub-titled, it is easy to follow and fab but gory film- go see. Also Blood Diamond is great too- enough of that.
Of course the sport has been on- Cricket series and Australian Open Tennis. David has become obsessed with cricket even though we have lossed every game but one, and that was only by 1 point!
I on the other hand prefer the Tennis. It is on the hostel TV most evenings so haven't had much choice but getting into it
now.
Today is australia day- we played silly buggers at the harbour and watched some of the shows but got exhausted by the amount of people again so now chilling back at the hostel.
The hostel we will be leaving in 4 days time has been our home for quite a while now and I will be sad to say goodbye. The staff are fab and go out of their way to help- being the locals there now we also get special treatment- i.e. some free use of internet and BBQ's-v cool. We have met some really interesting people- we shared a room with a couple of aeronautic engineers who are working on getting normal people into space. They were fascinating and had no problem explaining everything to us- although I must admit some went straight over my head! They had just bought a house in LA and was now broke but having a 3 week hol before starting their new jobs so we shared some advise on places to see and they moved on unfortunately, as now we have a Japanese couple who don't speak much English, get up at 5.30am every morning and make alot of
noise. Oh well you can't always get what you want. Most of the other people we were hanging with have moved on except Martin who unfortuately got ill here and is having to go home. I feel really bad for him- I know I would be gutted if I was in that situation, not that I don't miss home but there is so much more to see and do..... I can't wait for the adventure of travelling again to return!
Update again soon.
