Edit Blog Post
Things have been a bit boring, I must admit. Sorry to my mother who I’m sure hopes for back to back blog entries. Still, I do have a story to tell.
The weekend before last, Dave and I decided to go visit a pet store, because I wanted to see what chow puppies looked like. The place we went to was called ‘Birds and Pets 4 Africa’, and it’s no ordinary pet shop- more like a small zoo. The indoor section sold all kinds of things, including lizards, snakes and exotic birds and fish. Outside were huge cages full of all sorts of birds you can imagine. It was huge. In the middle they had small cages of puppies. They were mostly tiny things around 6 weeks old, but there was one lone dog who was 4 months old and who was plainly too small for her cage. She was a boerboel, a South African breed of dog who grow very big, so at 4 months old she was already about the height of a staffy.
The guy there said she had been there since the 2nd of November, and that all her litter had sold, but that she
hadn’t, probably because she had been born with only 50% vision in one of her eyes. The other eye was fine and she had no real problem seeing. They had her marked down to a third of the price at 500 rand (about $100 AUD), but no one wanted her.
I so badly wanted to get the dog out, as she had been in a cage for two and a half months. After we left, I pestered Dave to ask everyone he knew to see if anyone wanted her, but we didn’t find anyone at that stage. The following weekend, we decided to go back to see if she was still there, which she was. So I though ‘stuff it’ and I bought her. I didn’t want her to be stuck in that tiny cage any longer.
We took her to our tiny place, which has only a courtyard, and let her run around. At first she couldn’t seem to believe there was life outside a cage, and she kept running behind the couch and peering at us. But she soon came into her own and started bounding around as all puppies should. We took her to Dave’s
The Dog... who was as yet unnamed
Her new owner called her Speckles parents to play with their dogs and they looked at us like we were mad, but his mother said she would have done the same. On Monday, Dave’s mum rang us and said she had found someone who would love to take the dog, one of her fellow teachers at the local primary school. Apparently, this lady had been through a divorce and was considering getting a puppy for company and also as protection as she had recently nearly been broken into. So the timing was great! We took the dog there and she immediately started running around the huge yard and sniffing everything. Her new owner loves her and cant stop raving about what an angel the dog is. I was very sad to see her go, I would have liked to have kept her but that would have been entirely impractical.
But I’m very happy that it turned out the way it did. For those in my family who know the budgie story, I’m sure you’re all rolling your eyes!
The other news at the moment is that Dave and I have a job interview on Tuesday at one of the private game reserves that borders
on Kruger National Park. Specifically, they were interested in my horse riding experience as they are looking for a horse guide. Dave is going for the position of a walking guide. Wish us luck.
My friend Emily will be arriving today (she is the Qantas flight attendant) and we are planning a trip on Saturday to the Lion and Rhino park in Joburg, and then to the Sterkfontein caves, where many very early human ancestors were discovered. So Im sure my next blog will be more interesting than this one!
Just an extra note for my brother, Dave’s just started a new webpage about building Porsches which he’d love you to check out sometime. He’s starting a forum and everything (I joked to him that you and he would probably be the only one’s interested in something like that…😊 but he’s pretty excited anyway) The site is http://www.geocities.com/buildinga911/Carrera.html
Im putting a pic up of the yellow 914 I was telling you about
(sorry if ive just bored everyone else)
Love Kel

I'm in love with Speckles!
Hey Chicky. Russ and I have decided that we are in love with Speckles. What a beautiful dog. I would have done the same thing. She so much reminds us of Bubbles with that face. My first thought when I read your story was the budgie incident and then of the pigeons that you saved that shat all over my car :) I think this story is trying to tell you something.... Love Deb
