Kel in Africa

Dear family and friends.
I decided to start this cos I am going to Kruger in 2 days and I want to make you all jealous.. though, last night I dreamt I was attacked by a lion, so it may very well transpire that none of you will be jealous after all.
Actually, its just cos I enjoy Russ and Debs travelblog and I am hoping that someone will enjoy mine too.

Hi to everyone back home and in the States too! I decided to let you all know what I’ve been up to again as I’ve had a pretty busy week. I had my friends from Aus, Em and Lachie, here for the weekend, then Dave and I went to a game reserve near Kruger National Park on Tuesday for a job interview. We decided to take Em and Lachie to the Sterkfontein caves and to the Lion Park for the day on Saturday. The caves are situated in an area known as the ‘cradle of humankind’ because this is where the oldest fossils of early hominids were discovered. They are 20 million years old and are currently still an excavation site as they have been digging up the remains of ‘little foot’ for the past 2 ... read more

Things have been a bit boring, I must admit. Sorry to my mother who I’m sure hopes for back to back blog entries. Still, I do have a story to tell. The weekend before last, Dave and I decided to go visit a pet store, because I wanted to see what chow puppies looked like. The place we went to was called ‘Birds and Pets 4 Africa’, and it’s no ordinary pet shop- more like a small zoo. The indoor section sold all kinds of things, including lizards, snakes and exotic birds and fish. Outside were huge cages full of all sorts of birds you can imagine. It was huge. In the middle they had small cages of puppies. They were mostly tiny things around 6 weeks old, but there was one lone dog who was ... read more

For new year, Dave and I decided to head down to Durban for some sunny weather and beaches. I packed my bikini and we left rainy Joburg early on the 30th and headed south for 6 hours. Durban is supposed to be very hot and humid, so I was expecting singlet and shorts weather. However, it seemed that the freezing rain decided to take a trip to Durban too, and for the next 3 days we froze our butts off. Nevertheless, we decided to pretend it wasn’t and proceeded to do what we had planned anyway. The first place we wanted to visit was Ushaka marine world, which is apparently one of the best aquatic centers in the world (well according to the South African’s anyway) and I must admit, it was pretty cool. The aquarium ... read more

There's been alot of electrical storms around recently. The place where we're staying (Dave's parent's while they are on holiday) is in a pretty secure complex. Or so I thought until the power went out the other night. Having no lights in the complex is a bit of a problem. Having the electric fences that border the perimeter out of service makes it more of a problem. Dave decided to bring the dogs in case they get poisoned by intruders. I started to visualise the scene in Jurassic park where the dinosaur plucks down the wires of the electric fence after the power fails… Well happily, nothing that dramatic happened. Still, when you’re not used to living in an environment like this, it does make you paranoid. Especially after Dave informed me that sometimes blackouts are ... read more

Dear All, Firstly, thanks to mum and Debs for your comments! I havnt been online since the 5th so sorry for the delay in posting them. And happy birthday to mum! Unfortunately, my long awaited Kruger trip is now over, but it was the most amazing trip I’ve ever had. I went with Dave, his mother, and her friend. It started with a very early morning last Wednesday, we were up at 4:30 and ready for the long 5 hour drive to get to the gate. I managed to wake up upon entering the park though! The others had all been to the park numerous times and bet that the first thing we’d see would be impala, as there are many, many of these. However, the first thing we actually saw was 2 lions, and this ... read more

Ive finally got a chance to do this travelblog thing. I don’t think it will be as exciting as Russ and Debs, so sorry in advance. Mainly, the past 2 weeks have been spent getting used to this place and the various unique aspects to living in Joburg. Everywhere you go you are fully aware that you are not living in a normal place. I am actually staying in a flat in Benoni, about 50k’s from Central Joburg, which is probably a bit better than Joburg itself. The flat is seperate to a house owned by Dave’s uncle and is on the same property, in a housing area with guards at a boomgate. We have a pass on our car which lets us through. There are 2 gates like this, and the rest of the roads ... read more
