Wild OrangutanWild OrangutanWild Orangutan

Enlarge the photo, look at the bottom of the white bit in the middle, turn your head to the right, turn around 3 times, touch your toes and then you might make out an orangutan with its arm streched up to the right out of its nest !!!
Fri 12th
A 8.45 Bus journey to Batu Puteh Village which is on the Kinabatangan river and on the edgeof the jungle. However suprise suprise because of the rain it is to wet and muddy to camp in the jungle so we have 2 nights staying with a local family.
First we went of a boat ride up the river and saw lots of long tail monkeys and an Orangutan making its nest for the night which was very cool but very high up in the trees to see clearly. We eat dinner in a large open room by the river owned by Mescot the charity that run the homestays. Chris, Kaz and I are sting in our guide Jims house. It is big and spacious and they have 2 cats that look like Tonga. The toilet and shower are out the back- squatting toilet and tub of water with a scoop- but nice enough.

Up at 5.30 for a 6am boat ride along the river (the other way). We saw another Orangutan and some probiscus monkeys-but only the males have the big nose and they were to far away to really tell. We stopped to have breakfast (made by our families) in the jungle but to get to were we were going we had to take our shoes and socks of and waid through because of the rain the walkway was flooded upto knee level. We thern continued into the jungle whcih was very, very, very very muddy to see a very wide tree. It was certainly an adventure with mosquitoes and Leaches as well as a scorpion which we found when Troy bumped into a tree which disintergrated!
Back to base, where some people tried unsucessfully to catch shrimp. We then helped to make lunch- I helped with the pumkin in coconut milk-whcih was very nice if I do say so myself!!
I gave Dee a birthday card from us all and a knecklace (both home made) as it was her 30th birthday- Happy Birthday Dee!
After lunch we watched a culture show that comprised of marshal arts and dancing, then I watched the others play volleyball- yes in the rain! Then back to our host family for dinner. It turned out that Rachel and Claire were in the family next door and so they came over for Karaoke after dinner. (Dinner was sat on the floor using only your right hand) However we had taught Jimsi (our host) a card game and he wanted to carry on playing it so we played cards insted- which suited me!

Sun 14th
We said good bye to our families- I really enjoyed being there. And got a minibus to Sandakan. Were we are suppost to be going to turtle island but because of bad weather (are you supprised!) it may be cancelled!!!
Apart form all the rain and things being shut and lack of showers (my hair hasn't been washed for a week) I am enjoying myself.
Sorry there aren't any pictures yet-most of them will be dark and grey anyway! I'll put them on soon.
Miss you all

Rain
Glad you're enjoying the wet jungle. It's been quite rainy (and windy) in UK too. Saw a photo of someone windsurfing on a flooded field near Cheltenham. Have been comparing the Intrepid website program with yours - they dont seem to mention rain or playing cards. Will buy a pumpkin and coconut for when you get home. Love DDLL
