Aloha to everyone again….
Thursday the 5
th here so even though it’s our wedding anniversary today in NZ, we have to wait until tomorrow for the 6
th January here, and we’ve got a great day and evening lined up to help us celebrate, but more on that later.
This morning after our usual brekkie we headed out in the car for a day of driving and sightseeing. We headed up to the north from where we are and went straight on past Lahaina and carried on up the coast looking for some interesting spots that Joy had found on a map.
The road started out as a usual 2 lane road but quickly turned into a very long, winding and narrow, mainly 1 way, scenic drive. No real towns in this part of the Island until well into the drive so it was all scenery and stopping at look-out spots to take in the fairly rugged coastline of North Maui. Saw lots of surfers at some fairly inaccessible beaches….they must be keen as they would have had to walk a long way down to the beaches carrying their boards. We didn’t venture down to the beaches as the
walks would have been a bit much for Joy even…with her sticks…too steep and with very variable, rough footing..the last thing we need is her slipping over and damaging that bionic back.
We stopped and took in the fantastic Mokolea Point Blowhole on the north east part of the island…had to walk a wee way down to get a good view but Joy did very well…had to help pull her back up the steeper parts to get back to road. It was a great sight and I’ll include a couple of photos on this blog. While here we spotted a small pod of 3 whales just off the coast…they constantly spouted and one breached almost fully for us and they ‘played’ around on the surface a lot. We watched them for quite a while and we also spotted them doing the same thing at the next two lookout spots we stopped at. Joy, with a new camera lens she shouted herself just before we left home, got some great photos so I’ll include a couple (unfortunately she didn’t get the breaching whale).
We eventually got to a town just north of Kahului, the airport city, called Wailuku and
stopped to find a well needed toilet. A very old, run down town with a big centre of very old buildings but very grubby and looked very unloved. We wandered around for a bit and did find a public toilet that was, at least, clean and tidy….thank goodness. Couldn’t find anywhere decent to have something to eat so carried on into Kahului and had some lunch there rather late..around mid afternoon.
While sitting eating we were able to make some reservations for our anniversary day tomorrow….on line. We are starting with a 2 hour ‘Whale Watching’ cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation at 1130am, sailing out of Maalaea harbour, which is about 20 minutes north of where we are staying in Kihei. Once that is done we’ll hang around a bit at Maalaea and then get on board the ‘Calypso’ at 5pm for a 2 hour ‘Sunset Dinner’ (and probably whale watching) cruise….3 course dinner and drinks on board so should be a lovely relaxing way to celebrate our anniversary for the day…we are both really looking forward to the day and, YES, Joy is wishing for a nice calm day on the water…fingers crossed everyone.
After sorting
all that out and depleting the debit card of a lot of US$ we drove across to Maalaea just to see where we had to be for the 2 activities tomorrow…parking, ticket pick up etc. etc. and then headed back to the Maui Banyan for a little rest.
Around 6.30 we wandered down the road to a local iconic restaurant, Moose McGillicuddy’s, for dinner and it was a lovely meal up on the second floor overlooking the beach…sort of….not that we could see much as it was dark by this time.
Just ending the day chilling out and writing this story up to post on the blog website.
That’s our day from Maui, Hawaii…26 – 27 degrees C most of the day and NO RAIN. We have had reports from home that the weather is packing up big time. Poor Christine and Marcus, after staying their first night in Auckland after arriving from Germany had bookings for a few days around the Coromandel and they have messaged us with photos showing just how miserable it is up. Hopefully their itinerary isn’t impacted too much.
Lots of love to everyone again. Take care over there. We’re both
going well albeit a little tired at the end of each day but, hey, we are both over 70 now 😊.
Mahalo from us.
Catch you with the next chapter.
