Hi All,
A short couple of train rides away from Shaoyang in Guizhou province lies the old town of Zhenyuan. Zhenyuan sits on the WuYang river and in ancient times was a prosperous trading city. From Hunan it's easy to catch a train from HuaiHua and it only takes a couple of hours.
We had a bit of a nightmare with the hotel as we were turfed out at 9pm because the police had refused to allow a foreigner to stay there. We had to move to a more expensive one for one night and then moved again to another which had no problems with foreign visitors.
First day we went up ShiPing mountain to see the MiaoJiang Great Wall. There were wonderful views on the 45 minute climb to the top. The wall itself was under some reconstruction so we couldn't walk the entire length. There are a lot of these defensive walls around these parts. They were built by the Han to try and keep the local Miao warriors out. On the walk back down we popped our heads into the Four Officials Temple which offered splendid views of the town from it's first floor.
After lunch and a
rest we payed a visit to QingLong Dong on the opposite side of the river from the old town. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the caves and various temples. A great place to see panoramas of the ZhuSheng Bridge and the river. In the evening we strolled along the river taking in the beautiful red lanterns and lights.
Second day we went for a hike in the TieXie gorge, short bus ride away on bus no. 7 from the old town go to the last stop, which is a very pretty scenic spot. We walked as far as LongTan and then walked back about 12 kms. It's fairly easy walking, not many stairs, but it is quite slippery in places and the cobbled pathways does take it out of your legs a little. It was great to be amongst the flora and fauna, the varieties of butterflies and dragonflies was amazing.

I've gotta visit Guizhou Provence. Your photos take me to those still authentic parts of China where there is melding of old and new but life continues as it has for generations past. Maybe it should be my Chinese 17th Provence...thanks for sharing.
