Finally we got to leave the shit hole that we had been staying in in Alice springs and get back on the road towards Adelade. We decided to get an express bus as it was cheaper and actually turned out to be a good laugh. After a 6hr drive in a full bus we reached our overnight destination- Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is an opal minning town, and although you are welcomed with the line '..we have had our police station burnt down twice and court blown up...welcome to Coober Pedy!' it was actually a really cool place. Most of the people live under ground, mostly due to the heat (as desert land) but also as if you build your house i.e blow it up, you can claim any of the opals found. There is a house that has 40 rooms and the owner is now a millionaire! some of the stories were funny like you could buy explosives in the local store and if someone was going to have a party they would set off a bomb at night to let the neighbourhood know it was an open party!. Anyway we got a tour of the mines and got to
see an example of an unerground house. That night we chilled in a pizza house and underground bar then stayed in the underground bunkhouse- it looked like a dungeon from outside but really nice inside solely for the relief of the coolness.
Back on the road the next day for a 10hr drive..... not enjoyable! esp when on top of other people! Woo hoo we reached Adelade.. the dryest state in Australia.. of course, until we get there! We had met a couple of Welsh guys on the drive down so hung out with them and done a quiz night at an English pub- we didn't win but we didn't loose, which was a bonus! We then moved on for some free drinks. Morwenna and I had a great night out at PJ O'Brians as it was ladies night- free Vodka! Although extremely under dressed we had a wicked night.
So finally when the rain did stop we watched a christmas parade through the city (Xmas already!!!) with was fun..being such a big kid and all! After a couple of days in Adelade it was time to move on to our 3 day tour of the Great Ocean Road. We
Funny Pic!
We got attacked by parrots when we showed them the seeds! decided on a tour instead of driving as the price wasn't too different. We couldn't believe our luck... it was sooo cold. I even had to buy a beanie!. The views were amazing even in the cold and rain and we got to do lots of activities. Our first adventure was caving. We geared up in our overalls, knee pads, helmet and head tourches and wondered what we had got ourselves into! It was great... we had to crawl and wriggle through some of the smallest gaps. When we were in the centre we all turned off our lights and sat in pitch black and silence- weird experience but nice in a way. One of the guys almost got stuck in one of the challenges, which was amusing. We got to see a bat but unfortunately it wasn't bat season so he was the only one around, tucked away. Straight after the caving it was time to go horse riding in the bush. David done really well, although he was put on the smallest horse again, and when the horse decided to do a runner after 2 roos decided to have a nose at us, he done really well to
The Brits on Vodka night!
Matt, Morwenna, Me and David at the beginning of the night! stop him. The guide even let David and the other beginner have a trot and canter up the hill after myself and another girl went off for a gallop. On our hack we also got to see a couple of ichidnas (large hedgehog things) and hear many kookaburras having a good laugh. BBQ and beer evening by the fire with the group and off to bed for another big day ahead. We drove the Great ocean road stopping off at famous places like 'London Bridge' rock formation, 12 apostles, inland rainforest, Torquay (surfers paradise and comp area) and finally to Melbourne.
Melbourne was the largest City we had seen for a while so it was a whole new experience. We went on a Neighbours day tour, where we went to the church Charlene and Scot famously got married, Erinsborough high school and Ramsey street. After a talk of the past and future story lines we took photos and got going. There is a 24hr security man in the street as amongst other things in the past a couple were caught at it in Harold's garden.. how funny!
Whilst there we met up with Morwenna again and went to the beach
Ramsey street
