Not long until I leave for Thailand. Ive heard that it is possible to buy anti malarial tablets in bangkok. I was recomended deoxycycline. If so please let me know where from and how much. If I can save money getting them there I will. Hope someone can help.

You can get Deoxycycline and most other antibiotics at any pharmacy in Bangkok...or any other place in Thailand. Its not an anti-malaria pill, but it is suggested as it has little side effects. Also, it is a med that when you take it, you must stay out of the sun...not conducive to tropical travel.

You can get Mefloquine (brand name Larium) but only from a doctor here in Thailand. Usually it won't cost you the doctor visit, just the pills. 10 pills cost me $20USD. Also, there is a new med out in the US called Malarone. Not available here, but if you can get it, it has very few side effects. Its the new wonder drug for anti-malaria.

And don't forget your Ciprofloxacin (or like)....a must whenever you travel abroad.

NOTE: I AM ONLY OFFERING SUGGESTIONS AND OPINIONS. I WON'T BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU TAKE ANY OF THESE DRUGS AND FALL ILL, HAVE AN ALERGIC REACTION. YOU MUST CONSULT A PHYSICIAN BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY DRUG.

I have taken deoxy on almost every trip I have made to SE Asia, and while there are sun warnings associated with it, I was never told to stay completely out of the sun, I was just told that I would possibly burn easier. I didn't actually notice if I burned faster mostly because I wear sunscreen anyhow, and because of the cultures of SE Asia, I usually have most of my skin covered in clothes anyhow.

The best way to keep from getting malaria is to keep from getting bit by mosquitos, so long pants and sleeves, especially in the evening, are recommended as well as a good repellant and mosquito nets at night. Reply to this
