Is there a good night life , are the people frendly and welcoming , Is there much work available , is it an expensive city , And how much is a pint ??? | MacCallumWorldTrek Bill & Sue MacCallum Post Count: 77 Msg: #2 98 weeks ago, February 4th 2008 | Vancouver is probably the most beautiful city in North America, surrounded by mountains and ocean. Work should not be a problem as western Canada is booming these days. You should not have any problem finding a job in a restaurant for example. The wage may not seem good, but you can count on tripling your wage with tips. People in Vancouver are generally quite laid back and tolerant. How friendly people are depends to a great extent on the neighbourhood you find yourself in. I might recommend the area around False Creek. There are lots of good pubs and nightspots within walking distance and the water taxis are cool. Now as for your question about the cost of a pint I think you will find Canada a little more expensive than Eire. A good Irish beer like Kilkenny or Caffery's will set you back about 6 Canadian Dollars in most establishments. If you buy it by the can and take it home it would be about 2 dollars a pint. Of course there are cheaper Canadian beers, but they are not a lot cheaper. | Hope you enjoy Vancouver! This is quite a small area which is known for drugs and prostitution. Otherwise it's quite a safe city. South of downtown is probably your best bet - somewhere near Broadway. I've had a couple of friends find relatively cheap accommodations when they first moved to Vancouver in that area. The North (across Burrard Inlet) and the west (along English Bay) you will find expensive. Here's a website to help you out. | http://vancouverguide.ca/index.asp?community=Vancouver Try Mount Pleasant or Kensington-Cedar Cottage areas especially as the rents are reasonable and there are a lot of young people there. danhead dan reilly Post Count: 5 Msg: #5 96 weeks ago, February 21st 2008 | do you know if busking is legal there, and is there many casinos | danhead dan reilly Post Count: 5 Msg: #6 96 weeks ago, February 21st 2008 | also we were thinking about getting accomadation in the university of british columbia but it seems a bit far out from the city, does the city have good bus services etc. | MacCallumWorldTrek Bill & Sue MacCallum Post Count: 77 Msg: #7 96 weeks ago, February 21st 2008 | If this website is any indication, busking is alive and well in Van. | http://citizen.nfb.ca/node/6437 The city does have good bus services and a Light Rapid Transit (like a subway up in the air). UBC is a good choice for cheap, basic accomodation in the summer. There are a number of casinos in the area.
