Getting to S. America

What's the best way to travel from Central America to South America?

So I'm in the beginning stages of planning a budget for my Aug-Nov 2008 stint in C. and S. America. My original plan was to fly to Peru after a month long stay in Costa Rica, but it looks like airfare is upwards of $580. I'm trying to budget $2,000 a month (is that realistic?) so a $580 plan ticket obviously takes a huge bite out of that budget. Am I looking in the wrong places? Is there a cheaper way to get from Costa Rica to Peru? Or even S. America in general. I don't have to fly directly to Peru.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In peru $2000 a month is a big budget the airfair there is the only really expensive part so you just have to bite the bullet and do it. Not sure of any alternative ways of getting there, but once there busses are definatly a cheap way to travel if you have the time. Reply to this

I think that you might need to re-think how you are bugeting. When I plan a trip the transport between countries is always a seperate item from the budget I give myself once I am in country. Why you might ask? Well it is pretty simple, if I can't get there, there is really no point in planning on spending any money there, is there? Not trying to be a smart-ass but if you think about it, it only makes sense.
Once you get to South America you will find your money will go a lot further than you think, and I am sure that a bus or train alternative would not be hard to find. Keep in mind South America, is huge. If you want to spend your time traveling to your destination you can try and get between locations on the cheap. If you want to spend your time being at your destination, go ahead and buy that airline ticket. Check with local/domestic airlines and also find a consolidator to get tickets through, both can say lots of the $ when you are in a situation where you have to fly.
