Hi Bally,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

Try No 1 Travel for flights from Japan. They often say tickets can only be bought within Japan, but when I've dealt with them I call to pay the booking with credit card, and they email the ticket.

Domestic travel is generally not cheap, so travelling to another port for the sake of a cheaper ticket may not be worth your while. Reply to this

Hello Bally :)

Excuse the lack of detail in the following, but it has been 10 years since I was in China and I forget.
I remember there was a boat conection which ran between Shanghai and someplace in Japan.
Maybe somebody else here can fill in the details.

If you can change your Japanese port of departure to Kobe or Osaka these might be useful;

www.seat61.com/China.htm - scroll down to the section on ferries

Hello. We did the Shanghai - Osaka ferry (and back again) last year. It takes 2 days and was really enjoyable. The tickets cost us RMB2400 each for a return ticket. That was for a four person cabin which has curtains on the bunks, a sink and a small 'living room' with TV (didn't get TV reception but they played videos which were sometimes in English!). Breakfast was included in the price of the tickets but you have to pay for the other meals (they are fairly reasonably priced and pretty tasty). There are cheaper tickets where you can sleep with the masses on the floor in a big open room and more expensive ones where you get a double bed and ensuite! The shared showers and toilets were kept very clean. The boat is fairly new and in a pretty good state. You get some lovely views entering and leaving the ports too.

I guess the only thing is that by the time you have transferred from Tokyo to Osaka and Shanghai to Beijing you'll have been travelling for around 5 days and probably spent a similar amount as you would have on a direct flight... but if you have the time I would definitely recommend it! Hi,

not necessarily the cheapest, quickest or shortest, but it's a nice alternative : go via Korea with a combination of ferry and bus or train.
Korea is not so visited and that's a pity because the locals are friendly and there are some very nice sights. See here for more details.

This is my suggestion:
Beijing - Shanghai (train) - Hangzhou - Suzhou - Guang zhou - Shenzhen - Liuzhou - Nanning
