My trip isn't as exciting as backpacking across an exotic country, but it's my first time travelling by Greyhound and I'm a worrying basketcase. I'm going to Quebec from Mississippi, according to Greyhound.com, a two day trip, and I have a few silly questions. I've heard some pretty negative things about buses and long journeys, and I hope to clear up those misconceptions today.
1.) Is travelling by bus really as unsafe as parents make it out to be? Are Greyhound in general as terrible as I've read?
2.) On the itinerary there are two layovers in which I will change buses, one in Atlanta and the other in New York. I've flown before and had to change planes in busy airports. Is changing buses the same? Just find the right location and bus number and hop on? Will they tell me which number I'm to look for? Will they check my bags again? As you can tell I have a horrible fear of getting lost (when I have a specific destination) or losing things, heh.
3.) Greyhound quotes the trip as being 1 day, 23 hours, and 20 minutes. Are their estimates pretty correct? I ask this because the final bus is scheduled to arrive in Montreal at 3am, and the person I'm meeting up with kinda needs to know ahead of time, as my cell phone doesn't work in Canada (that's another thing, I need to figure out how to fix).
4.) What about food and drink? Do I need to pre-pack some sandwiches? Or do they make appropriate stops for meals and potty breaks? Or are their potties on the bus?
Basically, am I going to be left to fend on my own or are the drivers helpful with scared, meek "newbies" such as myself.. 😊 I'd hate to get off in Atlanta to change buses and my backpacks be left behind.
And I have one question about driving.. Would all the gas add up to be cheaper than taking a bus? Would that be a better choice? (Granted I'm 18 and it'd be a long debate with the parents, they don't even like the bus idea.)
Thanks so much for any advice, tips, help anyone can provide. I really appreccate it!
