Getting there.....

Hello, I'm hoping to leave Bangkok next week and head for the Perenthians in Malaysia, has anyone taken this route before and could anyone suggest the best way for me to get there?
I've done a bit of research and it seems I can get a bus to sungai-kolok, then cross the border to a town on the Malay side called Rantau Panjang and from there take a bus to Kota Bahru.
Does this sound about right?

And also has anyone done this trip recently as I hear that theres a lot of trouble near sungai-kolok at the moment with terrorists and what not.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,
Many thanks,
Dan. Reply to this

Hi Dan,
This route is not that uncommon, many people do it by train, but of curse you could fly AirAsia to KL or Panang. I wouldn't worry too much about the border crossing. It's always good to be careful, but I think it's often a lot of hype to give the Islamic community in that area a bad name. I found the people to incredibly friendly. If you have time, on the way visit Koh Lipe. Reply to this

Kota Bahru is a bigger town on the north east coast but from there you need to make your way south a bit to the town of Kuala Besut. You can catch a taxi or local bus (but I don't think there is a direct bus). Taxi's aren't that pricey really, about 35RM and its about a hour away. From Kuala Besut you can catch a boat over to the Perhentians and they'll drop you at the resort you want on either Besar or Kecil. The boat from the mainland may unload you still off shore and you have to board a little boat to take you to land and the little boat man will rip you off, but they rip everyone off. Reply to this
