2 Weeks in South China : Shanghai to Hong Kong?

Hi

I'm considering going to China for about 2 weeks in December with a chinese-speaking friend. I've been to North China before so am considering southward of Shanghai. Its a massive country though, is Shanghai to Hong Kong too great a distance? Is there any alternative route you would recommend?
