Wet Season Tavel Advice

In need of advice for travelling in the Philippines from June to August
17 years ago, February 27th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #11198
As of June 10th I'll be heading to the Philippines for roughly 2 months. However, the more research I do, I've learned these months can be verrry wet.

Is it worth travelling to the Philippines this time of year? The idea of nothing but rainy weather is slighly turning me off. I'm looking for advice that will, hopefully, convince me that travel from June to August in the Philippines is still worth it! I'm itching to go, but for the amount of money it will cost me, I want to be sure it's worth it!

Any advice will be appreciated hugely! Reply to this

I'm wondering the same thing.. From what i've read it rains often, but for short periods followed by sunshine.. This seems alright, but any input from people who actually know would be greatly appreciated. I'll be there in August 2007 Reply to this

Yes, if your're going June to August, be prepared for typhoons - strong wind and rains....it could be sunny (and hot) without the rain, though. Flooding is also another problem when there's a typhoon. Manila gets flooded even without typhoons so imagine how bad it could be if there's one. Once i was in Manila, flooding on a main street was up to 4 feet - and with dead rats, garbage and cockroaches floating on the dirty water. And if travelling to mountain regions, landslide can be a problem. SO BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST. Best time to visit though is December-January so you can experience the Christmas Season there.
There's a lot of good things though in the Philippines and am sure you have read about those already otherwise you won't itch to go there.
Have fun on your trip and please, help stimulate the economy there!!!

hi there,

im a native of manila so bit of local knowledge.

the thing abt the wet season is rain depends on whether there is a typhoon or not. if there isnt one, you could be in for sunny days. however, should a typhoon strike, expect to wade through flood waters and muddle through some gloomy days. (I have to say though, I have not seen dead rats floating in the water and would honestly say flooding is no longer so much of a problem- relative statement).

A thought: earlier in June should not be such a problem. Towards September, there is a higher likelihood of typhoons.

let me take the discussion a different direction, where are you planning to go? There are regions that seem to be less affected by the wet season. (Do note that I am from Manila so this is based on my trips to those places- not from living there). E.g. I've been to CEbu (central part of the Philippines) and have always encountered sunny weather. Also why not up the ante? I had a colleague (British) who made a yearly ritual of going to Boracay in November. This is the low season so it was cheaper and less crowded. He took his chances with the typhoon. He did get stuck there once n the middle of a typhoon and he said it was an experience watching the storm clouds forming and coming towards the island from his vantage lounging on the beach =).

Not sure this helped. Nutshell, it depends on timing; sun and rain arent usually seen on the same day, you'd have spells (days) of each. Also, you might want to check out the southern islands / beaches. Bigger returns =)

Good luck. Reply to this

Hey, thanks for the info.. I was planning on spending most of my time on Palawan.. possibly a few days in Boracay, maybe a day or so in Manila before the flight out of the Philippines, because I'll be flying home (Canada) from Bangkok and I think Manila is the only link to Bangkok from the Philippines? hi! it is the rainy season from june to about october in the philippines. just check the weather announcements in the local news parogram on t.v. or radio when you arrive so you can plan your trip. sometimes there's a typhoon in manila (or luzon island) but the sky is clear in the visayas or mindanao. i've recently visited palawan, the locals said that their island is not within the typhoon belt area in the philippines.

the food is inexpensive in palawan. a lot of local restaurants are sort of art galleries too. like kalui and kamarikutan in puerto princessa city. also try the vietnamese restaurant in vietville village. the locals are friendly. Reply to this

when it rains, it comes down hard. But because it is also hot here, things tend to dry up pretty quickly afterward. Reply to this
