Hello
Avian Flu. Vietnam via media is reporting additional outbreaks of confirmed Avian Flu. So far it seems it is not severe but wondering is there a member on the ground there who can advise from an internal prospective void of media context? Would be valuable to plot this as it was devestating to Tourism as a whole a few years ago. Thanks Reply to this

Coming up in the news: 12 people died from it as of today. Vietnam Bird Flu Report - from the BBC, and World Heath Organisation

I do think that it is strange that it gets so much media attention - there are many more devestating illnesses out there - maleria - that effect many more people.

Does the negative media coverage devastate tourism more than the disease? - I think so. But historically flu has been one of the largest killers, an estimated 20 million people 1918-1920 from "Spanish Flu".

I also wonder if it is already having an effect on Vietnamese tourism.

Well, the US has started to allow direct travel to Vietnam again, so I'm guessing tourism should be getting at least a bit of a boast there. I would love to go to Vietnam... Bird Flu wouldn't stop me unless of course it hit Epidemic proportions. Reply to this

The Spanish flu that killed more in two years that the bubonic plague killed in 100 years was a mutation of swine flu. The real fear with avian flu is that if it mutates into an easily contracted form it could quickly spread around the world. nothing really wrong there as it would solve the population problem. there is no pollution problem: there is a people problem. by the time it would hit epidemic proportions, it would already be too late for most travellers since the air aboard most commercial aircraft is not filtered through a .005 micron filter, it is not passed through a microwave, and it is not sanitized by heat. no real problem again because we are all going to die eventually. be optimistic and figure that today, while viewing the boduroduro, would be a good day to die. tourism is hurt by even a hint of disease. remember SARS? The damage done to the Korean economy as well as China's was devastating. Reply to this

At the moment, Vietnam has reported that Avian Flu is temporary stopped, no new flu points has found. This has been confirmed by WHO in last 2005.
Vietnam Gorvement is trying to keep it in control and to stop it. Many actions has been executed to, control and stop consuming non-prevent domestic fowls, warn people about risk of bosting epidemic diseases.
ALthough avian flu is temporary stopped, all hotel and restaurants still stop providing kitchen and related foods in their menu. You will have no reason to afraid.

Right. There is no reason to be afraid. The government has everything under control. The government has learned how to keep wild fowl from flying over, near, or past cities. The government has learned how to convince a farmer not to hide "just a few" chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, away so that his family can make the needed money to live. Besides,HIS animals show no signs of infection. Only the neighbors birds are dying. No harm in keeping a few. Darn, we forgot about the pigeons. Last week, 31 swans flew into Italy, 23 of them were infected and died. Before they died, they were seen walking on the grass eating bugs that the pigeons were also sharing. Face it, we will not stop this. It will be pandemic. It will kill several hundred million. Alone with diseases like aids, ebola, and SARS, avian flu is natures way of getting rid of the weak, the genetically ill-equipped, and the superfulous. We have ruined the planet for the number of people on it and now nature is going to thin us back to a reasonable figure. Reply to this

You can have egg for breakfast completely, i may sure . You can go to Big C market (in Tran Duy Hung St) for fine eggs and a thing to remember: take glove when doing your breakfast. Wash you hands after doing. Reply to this

Thanks for the directions 😉 - the hotels I've been staying in have taken eggs off the menu... just bread and jam this morning. When I asked why no omlettes - the answer was because of bird flu... a demonstration on how the first impacts of something like bird flu that I feel (eg. average Joe) are very very slight, though it's been devastating to the poultry industry already. ******************WARNING******* ***********WARNING********** ********WARNING******************WARNING*****************

YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN VIETNAM THAN CONTRACT THE AVIAN FLU. UNLESS YOU LIKE TO SLEEP WITH CHICKENS, YOU ARE NO MORE LIKELY TO GET AVIAN FLU. WITH SARS, EBOLA, AND OTHER DISEASES, SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS ARE NECESSARY, BUT DON'T BE OBSESSED WITH TOO MUCH PREVENTION OR YOUR WILL RUIN YOUR TRIP. BE CAUTIOUS, BUT NOT COMPULSIVE. MORE CHILDREN DIE OF STARVATION AND MALARIA IN ONE DAY THAN PEOPLE HAVE DIED OF AVIAN FLU IN ITS HISTORY OF AN EPIDEMIC. I DON'T PET THE DOGS IN SE ASIA, MUCH LESS THE CHICKENS.

JUST MY TWO-BAHTS WORTH.

Yes, there is the bad fact in Vietnam that is the most dangerous does not come from avian flu or any else but from traffic accident. And we all know that have to do many things to end this situation. If you visit Vietnam, don't try driving with your self. Take a taxi or motor rider when you want to go to a where.
Please read carefully the notifications on the way to make sure that you're keep the right on the traffic. Reply to this

Yes I agree with the above, the chances of getting Avian is slim but thats no excuse for being careless about these things. I think the advice is the same in Vietnam as anywhere else in the world...dont mess with the dirty bird! Good advice on Avian in Vietnam here. Reply to this

There is no reason to be afraid, while Vietnam is one of the safest countries in Asia (or over the world?).
