3 Weeks in Malaysia - open Itinerary

We are a family (2 adults and our 11 year old daughter). Travelling to Kuala Lumpur on the 14th December 2014, we fly back to Europe on the 7th January - so that gives us just over 3 weeks. We would really like your help to build an itinerary for what to do during this time - we have a very open mind.

To give you an idea:
We have been to KL before and done all the city sites. We had a fantastic time in Taman Negara - Loved it!
We also saw the Fireflies, and Batu caves.
We love jungle trekking and being with nature, we like adventure, relaxing beaches (not too touristy), we love Asian food, enjoy staying in Bambu huts. We are happy to hire a car (we have driven all through Thailand North to South). On a bit of a budget, but happy to spend if it is worth it.

*We never got to see Cameron Highlands...but not sure if we should include in this trip.

* I think we would like to visit Panang and maybe Langkawi (how easy is it to travel between the two?) Or missing out on Langkawi are there any places of interest on the mainland near Panang. Either getting the train or hiring a car.

*We would really like to go to Borneo - not sure if to choose Sabah or Sarawak? Maybe do all three - Sabah to Brunei to Sarawak - is that possible or worth it? I think Brunei would be mainly to tick the box that we have been there.

*In Borneo:
- We would like to see Orangutans and other wildlife - I don't think in Sepilok as that doesn't sound very natural.
-It would be lovely to stay in a long house. How easy is that? What sort of price?
-Maybe white water rafting - not sure where?
- Like the look of doing a home stay for 2 or 3 nights
-It would be nice to relax on a beach and do some snorkelling and perhaps Scuba.
-I would love to travel down a river in the middle of the jungle/perhaps sleeping on a boat

We are also open to getting a flight to either Indonesia/Philippines/Thailand

Any ideas or thoughts on any part of the above would be very very much appreciated. Thank you.

I lived in Malaysia for almost three years awhile back, mostly in the Cameron Highlands, so I would recommend you visit there. It's cooler and has many great jungle walks to waterfalls and tea plantations. I also spent some time in Penang which has great history, food, beaches, and shopping...and connections to Langkawi and the southern islands of Thailand. These two destinations should take about a week.

As you have three weeks, and have seen most of the Malaysian cities, I would recommend and exploratory trip to a nearby country(ies). Airfares from KL to Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, or Indonesia are ridiculously cheap on Air Asia and other discount airlines.

I also recommend you read blogs from other TBers by clicking on the continent on the bar at the top of the page, and then the country, and then the province and location you are thinking of visiting. Reply to this

Borneo is a little bit dangerous, so proceed with caution.
Your list is interesting, impressive, even. I haven't seen so much of Malaysia. I wish I could in the future! Reply to this

You can fly between Sabah and Sarawak so you could combine both. Sabah sounds like it ticks a lot of your boxes.

Off Kota Kinabalu there are some small islands with beaches and snorkelling. You can then visit the national park around Mount Kinabalu. You don't have to climb the volcano to have some interesting walks. In Sandakan I wouldn't strike off Sepilok as it lets you get really close to the orangutans. However the Kinabatangan jungle area has lots of jungle lodges where you can trek and see orangutans in the wild as well as lots of other wildlife. Semporna is supposed to have some great scuba diving,

We only visited Kuching on Sarawak but it was really interesting. From there you can stay in a long house with a local tribe. Reply to this

You should include a <snip> in your itinerary. You can even travel from Singapore to Malaysia or vice versa through private MPVs like those offered by <snip>
