I am planning on taking a month long trip to jamacia this summer and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, tips, or must do's when i am down there. This is not my first time traveling out of the country, but it is my first time traveling out of the country alone as i have recently turned 18 Reply to this

Jamaica is a beautiful country. its all inclusive hotels on the north coast are great. It is a good destination for the seasoned and more matured traveller on his or her own. I would be a bit apprehensive of my 18 year old travelling all by himself to Jamaica especially away from the tourists areas. Yes, I am aware that lots of the young people from North America/ Europe swarm Jamaica for Spring break and are on their own. Spring break is , however, well planned/organised and catered for . The young go to booked accommodation and most of the revelry and other activities take place in or around hotels and nearby beaches.
I am assuming that if spring-breakers want to travel as far as Kingston to see for example, the Bob Marley Museum or Port Royal that the events/outings would be organised by the hotels or groups specialising in tours etc so that the young go in groups instead of travelling alone. I wouldn't venture on to public transport alone. I do not know if an adequate public transport system has now been developed in the tourist areas say from Montego Bay to Negril or Montego Bay to Ocho Rios. look/See what other tourists are doing. Ask your hotel desk for advice. You might be able to get a seat in a mini bus or government bus plying the North coast/ between Montego bay and Ocho Rios

In Barbados , for example, I would travel on public transport because Barbados has developed its public transport to cater for tourists and locals alike

I wouldn't want to travel far a field in Jamaica alone as an eighteen old unless I have friends or relatives there to advise me or to go along with me.The young are however, fearless and out for adventure. my advice to you would be to make sure that all your travel arrangements are water tight and secure. you might be a young driver but no 18 year old, I think, is experienced enough to drive on Jamaica's roads especially when you have to drive on many very steep, narrow, winding roads. . Overtaking can also be hazardous. Leave driving in Jamaica on hills & mountains to those who are experienced, know the roads and terrain. if you want to see the beauty of the hills and mountains of Jamaica, book tours which are organised by the hotels or tourists boards. Do not try to see every where in Jamaica on one trip leave some places for another month when you are older. If you are on the north coast there is lots to see in Montego Bay, Ocho rios, Negril. Or even Bob Marley's final resting place in hilly/mountainous area of Nine Miles, St Anns. Go on one of the organised tours. Book trips on organised tours for safety and peace of mind or if you have good friends or relatives in Jamaica travel with them. When you are a tourists in any part of the world it is important to think of safety and security. Do not forget your health.

PS. It was a difficult one to reply to. However, I had to visualise you as my son then it was not that difficult. I have a very good working knowledge of Jamaica as I have lived there and travelled much throughout. Reply to this

Eric, Jamaica is really an excellent choice for a long summer vacation. It is always nice to have good company on these long trips, but if you want to go solo this also has its advantages and there are lots of vacation options you may want to consider.

First of all what size budget are we dealing with here? A really nice luxury (all-inclusive) 4* hotel in Jamaica during the summer months could put you back up to US$400 per day. Now, assuming you will be staying on the island for one (1) month or 30 days, then we are talking about US$12,000. This of course does not include ground transportation and shopping.

You are 18 years ( or will be soon), and I assume also adventurous; so I definitely would not recommend an ‘all-inclusive’ Hotel ( certainly not for the entire month). You could get a lot more bang for your buck in looking at alternative accommodation options.
For less than a half of that “All- inclusive’ cost you could rent a beautiful villa, get a housekeeper and private cook; tour some exciting attractions such as swimming with Dolphins; go on a catamaran tour of the famous Dunn’s River Falls; experience the Mystic Mountains adventure tour; soak up the night life at exciting clubs ( if that is your thing); enjoy the real Jamaica culture ( food , reggae music and more) and have change left over.

Have an awesome time! I don't know much about Jamaica since I still yet have to go there and visit that country. Although, most of my Jamaican colleagues at work suggested to don't hang around Kingston at night as it may be dangerous. I'd say go explore and meet people and learn the culture as you go from the people who lives there. Try new food. I always loved their Jerk chicken and Goat Roti! Enjoy your Caribbean experience!
