I have already booked a tour for Tibet but I need to get a train ticket in Chengdu. Are there budget places to get 1 way train ticket at a budget price for traveling September 12th. Any help appreciated.
Reply to this Tour agents such as http://www.travelchinaguide.com/ charge a lot (~$25) for booking on line. It's best to buy tickets directly at the station to save money. However, tickets go on sale about 20 days in advance so can sell out quickly...that's one advantage to booking on line...peace of mind...especially if you have a tour booked at the other end. You might want to check out flights which take two hours and cost about the same as a soft sleeper train that takes 40 hours to get to Lhasa from Chengdu.
Reply to this Thanks Bob, I appreciate that information. I will arrive on September 5th in Chengdu and need to take the train on September 12th. I agree, peace of mind by having the ticket Inadvance would be great. I primarily want the experience of the train, I realize its about 2 days. Is the train ride in your experience worth it....Again, thanks for your help. JR, USA
Reply to this In March I took the train along the Silk Road from Beijing to Urumqui, which included three overnight trip in a soft sleeper. The soft sleeper is very nice. The train from Beijing to Lanzhou continued on to Lhasa, but I didn't. Of course you could break up your long trip from Chendu by stopping in Lanzhou, although the main reason I stopped there was to go to the Labrang Monastery in Xiahe. Anyway, I enjoyed the train and would recommend it to you.
Reply to this I understand that it is almost impossible to purchase a soft sleeper from Chengdu to Lhasa. Can you share your experience? Did you make it?
