Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

I plan to go to Vietnam for 5 days. I am thinking which city I should go!

Actually, I want to go to some museums or some sites about Vietnam war. However, I only have 5 days to travel. I don't think I can go to both places.
Can anyone give me some suggestion? Reply to this

With only fivedays you will have to limit yourself to the city
you fly into (and out of) and one other destination. Either Hanoi or Saigon have many museums in and around. So if you fly into Hanoi I would recommend Halong Bay as that destination. If you fly into Saigon I would recommend either the Mekong Delta or Dalat as that destination. Reply to this

While I haven't been to Hanoi yet, I would still recommend HCMC. You will find plenty to keep you occupied for a few days.

The War Remnants Museum is quite big and will take at least half a day to see. You could then spend some time at the Reunification Palace, this is where the tanks broke through the gates on 30th April 1975, bringing the end to South Vietnam as a country. There are several other smaller museums around the city, such as the Ho Chi Minh and History museums, which you can visit at your leisure.

Notre Dame Cathedral makes for an interesting visit and while you are in the area, there are plenty of places where you can do some shopping, if you feel so inclined. Ben Thanh market is centrally located and certain items can be bought for quite low prices, just remember to haggle.

If you're into military history then I would highly recommend a visit to Cu Chi tunnels which is to the north of the city. Getting there and back, including your visit will take a day. The large and rather impressive Tay Ninh temple is further north still and you can see both of the above should you wish to book yourself on an organised tour.

If you're still left with a day spare and you are looking for something to do then Dai Nam theme park offers a somewhat curious diversion. This is a large zoo cum theme park with a typically Vietnamese slant.

Hope this helps 😊

Thanks "Bob and Linda" and Nick for the useful suggestions.
I think I will choose HCMC!!
I agree that Cu Chi and War Remnants museum are definitely the sites I look for. Beside these two places, I think I will go to Mui Ne for one night. I think Mui Ne is famous for beach. Reply to this

Mui Ne is nice, but just be aware that it has become a resort predominantly for Russians. Getting there is quite easy and I would recommend the Phuong Trang bus service which will take you directly from HCMC to Mui Ne in around 5 hours. The ticket costs about $7 each way.

If you book a hotel along the Nguyen Dinh Chieu strip, they will drop you outside your hotel and pick you up again. I went there last year. Check out my blog for more details.

Mui Ne is quite a long way to travel for one night. It's about 5 hours there and then 5 hours back if you take the bus. You would have to take the morning bus there, leaving at about 7am, arrive at 1pm, and then get the 2pm bus back the following day. It's not long really.

If you want a beach and you haven't got long, how about Vung Tau? It's only about an hour by boat from HCMC. You can use the Imperial Beach Club private beach and pool for $10 a day. Reply to this

Been to both Hanoi and HCM. If you're into culture, go to hanoi but if you like shopping, HCM is the place to be. ;-) I have some photos of our recent Hanoi trip here.

Dear Lucas,
welcome to our country.
Actually, Ha Noi has much more museums than Ho Chi Minh as there was the centrel of goverment board.
In Mui Ne, it is famous for sunny beach in VN, and many resort has private beach that not many provinces could have that advantage. and now, it is very convinient for you if traveling by train, it will take you 4 hrs to get there, cost about 7 usd. However, you mus stay there at leat 2 dáy and 1 night.
Have a nice trip. Reply to this
