Grizzly bear viewing

Has anyone ever been? Does anyone know who is best to book with?

Nikki and I fell in love with horse riding after a trip to Arizona in 2007 when we spent a week on a ranch.

We've read about a week long trip to Canada in which we can ride every day and camp out in search of grizzly bears.

The cheapest I have found the trip, including flights, is £4000 per person. I'm sure we must be searching for the wrong thing, surely it can't be that expensive?

Has anyone ever been or could recommend a website that would be cheaper?

Also, when would be the best time to go, I've read on numerous websites different dates? Reply to this

That seems incredibly expensive (although I haven't looked at international airfare - still). I know in the U.S a standard all-inclusive pack trip (horses + camping + meals) will generally run around $1500 US for a week, depending on when and where. If you need to take private charter or float planes to get somewhere particularly remote, that quickly adds up the cost, but that should still leave plenty of options open.

Have you considered Alaska?

The international airfare is about £1200, I must just be looking at the wrong sites, I thought it was expensive.

I didn't realise you could do it in Alaska too, when ever I search on the internet the only pages I find are for Canada.

I'll search for Alaska today, thanks alot for your help. Reply to this

I think British Columbia is one of the better places. You can also go see the Polar Bears in Canada if that interest you. We were going to go see the Polar Bears last year but ended up going to Morocco instead. Most of the bear trips are on the pricey side.

British Columbia is a great place to see bears. On Vancouver Island (the very west coast) you can see tons of black bears in the fall. They're around all year but you can see the best ones if you know where the fish are spawning (you have to be careful though!). Polar Bears only in the arctic. On the mainland there are also lots of brown bears - the trick is to go somehwere somewhat remote. Reply to this

Alaska is an excellent place to view grizzly bear. What may help you in your search is to understand that in Alaska they are known as Brown Bear - meaning both the 'Kodiak' and 'Grizzly' are the same species. I don't know if have already taken your trip or not, but there are plenty of options, from Hyder to Kodiak to Admiralty Island. Viewing by horseback is not generally offered, and would be quite dangerous as brown bear as faster than horses for short distances. The main time to view these bear would be during the summer as the salmon return up rivers. But Alaska is vast and huge, which each area having different times when the salmon (and bears) show up. I would be glad to give more detailed information if you post again with questions. Reply to this
