Looking for cheap Spanish school.
11 years ago, May 31st 2012 No: 1 Msg: #157023
I am looking for a cheap Spanish school that has one on one instruction for about 4 hours a day and homestay. I've been looking and most of the ones I found had small group classes. I'm not picky about region of Costa Rica. Any ideas would be great. Thanks! Reply to this

Hi there,

We just spent a month studying Spanish in Guatemala and really enjoyed our time there. We studied at Cooperativa Spanish School in San Pedro on Lake Atitlan. Our lessons were one on one, 4 hours per day (20 hours per week) and the price was $95 per week. To stay with a family it was $155 for the week. We thought we'd mention this to give you an idea of prices. Keep in mind, Spanish school in Guatemala is known to be some of the cheapest in Central America.

Our friend studied in Costa Rica, in Samara, at Intercultura Spanish School. The prices for 20 hours per week + the homestay was $455.

We did a lot of research into Spanish schools after our initial month in Guatemala, that's why we still have the prices written down. 😊

If you are flexible on what country you study in this website is pretty helpful.

Another option might be to take a look at a Lonely Planet or other guide to see what Spanish Schools are listed there.

Suerte!

In response to: Msg #157063 Thank you! I studied in Guatemala 2 summers ago and had a great experience. It was much cheaper. However, I'm going to be with friends in Costa Rica for a few months so I was hoping to find classes there. It's just so much more expensive. Thanks for the tips. I'll check out Lonely Planet. 😊 Reply to this

I never studied in Costa Rica, but when I studied Spanish in Buenos Aires, the teachers suggested I live in either a dormitory or apartments where Argentine students lived. They explained that home stay can be a great experience, but that for someone wanting to experience the social life of the region and to discover the city's hidden fun; you need to stay with people who like to go out.

Home stay is great if you are only going to focus on your studies or you enjoy having a surrogate family. I enjoyed the Argentine students I met. The cost was slightly higher staying in the dorms, but I think the overall experience was better, at least for me. Reply to this
