I am looking at making a trip for a month to Indonesia. I want to explore as much as I can. I am looking a a basic rate for day to day living. Cheap accommodation but have spending money for activities etc if needed.

I am unsure what would be the best time to visit? Any suggestions are welcome 😊

I have researched on my own but I would also like help from those who have or are looking to backpack around Indonesia. Thanks in Advance! Reply to this

Hi there, if you are looking to travel on the cheap in indonesia you may find it tough going.
We went to Indonesia on our trip to SEA because we had alot more time on our hands than expected. We got a cheap flight there but getting there was the only cheap thing about it. Accommodation, food and esp travel were the most expensive we'd found in all of Asia. very very deceiving. We went in January and there was a lot of rain but it was incredibly humid.

If you are thinking of traveling as much of it as you can, although i know alot of people disagree with it, i would advice researching and booking internal flights as far in advance as possible. Boats and busses to, from and throughout all the islands we visited were sky high and for what you got was a massive rip off.

Dont wish to put you off, but just seriously research and book as far ahead as possible for things to get the best price 😊

Thanks for your reply!

I have looked into the prices of hostels and hotels in the area and other accommodation, and even food.. and most people find it quiet cheap over there.. But I will take your advice and safe a little extra just incase.

What time of year did you travel? Any recommendations?
I am from Australia so the rain nor humidity wouldn't bother me.

I look to travel as much as I can on foot and by bicycle. I didn't realise you had to book in advance for bus and boat trips? I will look more into this. Reply to this

Hello Maaria 😊

I was in Sumatra last August. It was Ramadan. I would avoid Ramadan if the restrictions about eating during the day bother you. There are however tourist cafes you can eat at during the day. I used to call them dens of inequitity, because eating during daytime during Ramadan was what curb crawling is here in Europe, as far as other people will judge you.

The visa as far as I remember was 25 US dollars. Cheap hotels were 5 to 10 Euros per night. 10 hour bus rides were around 15 Euros. 5 to 10 Euros per day is enough for cafe food. And food at markets and street stalls costs less. Tours can be expensive, but you can just pick and choose what you like most, to cut costs, or avoid them even.

I didn't realise you had to book in advance for bus and boat trips? I will look more into this.

It is probably wise to book these beforehand, but I only did this sometimes, and always managed to get on a bus or boat on the day I wanted to go.

One warning: Leaving Sumata was complicated. I arrived at the boat terminal appearently without having the right immigration/tourist paperwork, and was taken to an agent to get it sorted. That took so long, that I had to spend an extra night in the pier town. So, dont leave yourself tight for time going anyplace in Indonesia.

Here are the blogs I have so far made about Sumatra. There will be more in a while.
