I am traveling from Costa Rica to Nicaraqua in November - what is the best way to travel

I have been to CR 4-5 years ago and we rented a small SUV and were able to get around just fine. I have also been to Nicaragua 3 times on medical missions, and so I know the roads can be okay to really bad. We want to get from Liberia to Granada, Masaya and possibly beyond. What is the best way to travel between the countries? And then once in Nica is it reasonable to rent a car/SUV? Reply to this

Hi
Bus transport between Costa Rica and Nicaragua is very simple and straight forward

Use the Tica Bus service that that moves from San Jose and goes to the Nicaragua cities of Mangua, Granada, or Rivas . This service is quite expensive. If you want to move to Nicaragua quickly and have a little change in you pocket this is the way to go. The Tica Bus staff generally speaks English if you do not speak any Spanish, and the service that they offer is described by the Costa Ricans as being, "Que lindo." The Ticos are mighty proud of their Tica Bus. Reply to this

I took Tica bus from San Jose to Nicaragua and got off in rivas but it goes all the way to managua if you want, It was not expensive at all, $22 one way from the tica bus ticket booth downtown san jose between 1st and 2nd ave, its about 4 hrs to the border, be prepaired for about 2 hours at the border check then 1 more hour up to around rivas, try to get a seat on the right side of the bus as you get a great view going paralell to the 2 volcanos on Ometepe!

Happy travels!!

Hi Marina

as far as documents go at the costa rican/nica border, if you go by tica bus you get out on the Costa rican side to stamp out, then back on the bus where a crew member takes everyones passport and goes to get it stamped in, in Nicaragua..The bag check on the Nica side is the longest part of it took us about 2 hours or so to unload and load back...

Hope that helps!
