Accomodation in USA - Very Confused!

I have an accommodation question I would love to be answered :)

I have been looking at accommodation in the different cities I am planning on traveling to but Im very confused with the prices that I am quoted. I get a quote that states the cost is per person per night. But when I get the grand total for the stay it doesnt state whether thats per person or the grand total for everyone travelling. Please help me make sense of this! Thankyou Reply to this

Hi Amy - Welcome to Travelblog!

Hm. That is a little odd but I can think of three reasons this might be happening. 1) Are you booking directly with a hotel or are you trying to book with an online-travel agent vacation package sort of thing? If you're booking with a vacation package they often quote you as price-per-person based on double-occupancy. Hotels that are 'all inclusive' will also quote you per-person, again, assuming two people will be staying in the room. 2) Lower-end hotels/motels sometimes charge you an additional $10/per addl person, and other properties might do the same if you exceed the accepted room limit (more than 2 people per bed). 3) Destinations that except lots of travelers at a certain period of time sometimes change the way they book rooms out to make the most profit. I'm thinking certain Florida cities during university spring breaks that often advertise the room rates as "per person" on various websites because they except that multiple un-related friends will be sharing the rooms and paying independently of each other.

But generally, hotels in the USA are priced and quoted per room/per night. If you'd like to share which hotels or booking site you're looking at, I can probably either clear up the confusion, or point you towards more reliable information.

Thank you! This is an example of a quote I receive:

11/14/2011 - 11/17/2011
Nightly Rates

MON 11/14/11 $99.00
TUE 11/15/11 $99.00
WED 11/16/11 $109.00

Avg. Per Night
$102.33

Room Subtotal
$307.00

Rooms
Before Promotion
Subtotal
$307.00

What do you interpret that as being - room grand total or room total per person ??

Thanks again 😊

Amy,

That is the charge for the room.It includes all of the people in the room. Depending on the city they will charge a higher rate for busier nights of the week. Hence the higher rate on Wednesday night. They might have a higher volume of business travelers at that time.

Remember that the subtotal of $307.00 does not include taxes and depending on the city they can be high. Potentially another 10% to 20%. Reply to this

Hi Amy! This is the quoted price per room. But sometimes they charge you bit extra based on the number of persons like as said by Stephanie. So you may also have to pay extra price per person per night. Reply to this
