As the title suggest i am looking to start my trip with a south to north 3 week tour of vietnam.

I am looking to book a flight from Sydney to HCMC on the 4th January 2011 with a flight from Hanoi to Phnom Penh, Cambodia on the 27th Jan 2011. This leaves me with 23 days to get from south to north and im after any advice on my itinerary, transport, must see sites ect.

So far it looks like i will land in HCMC spend a few days here and a day trip thro the Mekong Delta possibly to Can Tho and tp the Cu Chi tunnels.
Then onto Dalat 1-2 days - Nha Trang - 1-2 days - Da Nang 2-3 days ( with a side tour of the My Son ruins) - Hue 2-3 days - Hanoi 4-5 days ( with a 2 day Ha Long Bay Tour ) - fly out of Hanoi to Phnom Penh.

Is this a reasonable amount of time? Am i missing anywhere of interest? Suggestions for must see place along my route?

Thanks in Advnace, Chris Reply to this

Hi

Sounds like a reasonable amount of time. By Danang, I assume you mean Hoi An. It's much nicer to stay in Hoi An than in Danang. 2-3 days may be too long in Hue. There isn't that much to see. The citidal is perhaps a half day, and then a boat trip to see some tombs. You could take a day off Hue and add it to Dalat or Nha Trang.

You could also stop off in Mui Ne between HCMC and Dalat. It's a different beach resort to Nha Trang. It's more beach huts and palm trees on the beach whereas Nha Trang is a city by the sea.

You can do a one day trip to the Mekong. Can Tho is 5 hours away from HCMC so not really a day trip length. It's another half day trip (a different one) to the Cu Chi Tunnels. You can add on the Cau Dai temple and make that a day trip. It's worth seeing.

I'd book the flights soon, as you are planning to travel just before Tet holiday, and flights fill up as overseas Vietnamese come back to see their families and people go on holiday.

- You should book the air ticket from Sydney at Australia 'coz it will be cheaper for you.
- Just one day in Hue is enough. ( Nha Trang and Dalta is the same.)
- Before and during Tet holiday, the services is rather busy and not always available, therefore you should ask a travel agency in Vietnam for help.

Cheers,

i would defo go to sapa. one of the most beautiful places in vietnam and great to hire a motorbike and drive around the mountains. you can get the night train from hanoi to sapa. if your young and like to party i would book your halong bay tour from hanoi backpackers. it will be a bit more expensive but its well worth the money and a great laugh.
