Traveling in Peru?

Question about travel in Peru
17 years ago, November 1st 2006 No: 1 Msg: #8282
Me and my girlfriend are planning a trip to Peru. We would like to see Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest in Northern Peru. I was going to fly into Lima and take a bus to Cusco. Then the train to Machu Picchu and then a bus to the Amazon. I don't know if this is wise. And if I do where should I fly out of to get back to the states. I am new at this travel so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely
DAN

I can only speak to Macchu Picchu as I've never gone into the rainforest in Northern Peru. Lima is essentially the only airport that you can fly in and out of internationally within Peru. How much time do you have to do all of this? A bus from Lima to Cusco would take some time. I'm not even sure what the direct route is. I lived near a town called Ayacucho in the Highlands and it took us 24 hours and two bus trips to get to Cusco.
If you're pressed for time, I would suggest flying from Lima to Cuzco. The only danger with that is if you are planning on doing the trek (which is well worth it despite is touristyness) is you'll get altitude sickness if you do that trek a day or two after flying from Lima (going from sea level to 2000m+ in elevation).
If you have some time, most people do Peru's southern circuit which is what I would suggest which leads you from Lima down south to Pisco-Paracas where there is a great nature reserve, Nazca (famous for the Nazca Lines in the desert), Arequipa (great hiking, dormant volcano siting) up to Puno and the Floating Uros Islands and up to Cuzco. In reality, there are 10 world heritages in Peru, you can choose one or more of them to travel. Just search them in Google and choose your final destination. By the way, you can visit this visit to get most travel information to Peru(including weather, hotel, recommended sites........):

I have another question about traveling in Peru. We are planning to fly into Lima and then fly up to Iquitos to see the amazon and from Iquitos to Cozco to see Macchu Picchu. The question is how much should I expect to spend for the flights inside Peru and who would be the best place to call to make the reservations? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Your other jungle option is to go from Cuzco to either Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado. I did the Manu trip which generally takes 1 week. It was bus and boat to get to the national park, and then a flight back to Cuzco. The tours to these areas can be organised in Cuzco and the week long trip I did cost about $US 750, which included the flight back to Cuzco. Reply to this

Our flight, about a month ago, was $US 70 from Lima to Cuzco with Star Peru. Because there are so many airlines competing, travel agents will tell you that one airline is "bad" etc, but just contact the airlines directly... they will have english speakers working. As well, it is only a one hour flight... getting good meals and seats is not essential for such a short flight. I don't recommend the bus trip, as it is around 30 hours and very indirect. Definitely give yourself 3 days to adjust to the altitude, and take it very easy in Cuzco while you are adjusting, otherwise you will just exhaust yourself. The city is full of stairs, strategically placed to wear you out, haha, jk. And there are plenty of good cheap hostels/hotels in Cuzco that will be very flexible in negotiating prices. We went to a high-end (ish) hotel in Cuzco that wanted $US 40 per room per night and just by mentioning our budget they gave it to us for $US 15 no questions asked. Crazy eh? So ask for a discount, its always worth a try. Reply to this
