Oahu Transportation

Long-term transportation options for Oahu

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting around the island?

I looked into car rentals for a month, but they are all near a thousand dollars. I thought about renting one and sleeping in it/camping in random places. But am not sure if it would be cost efficient.

I also wondered about simply camping out at a camp ground then taking the bus around the island. Although I am not sure how easily this can be done or if most of my time will be spent sitting on a bus.

Hitchhiking? I am a single girl and somehow this may not seem to be the best option. But, one can wonder....

Any cheap ideas for getting around--please let me know! Reply to this

Hi Jane -

I've used the bus to get around Oahu before - there is actually decent coverage providing you want to go to places that are close to major roadway (beaches, for example) or are typical visitor destinations. Once you get outside the cities they don't stop all that frequently so it's not like you're stuck waiting and waiting and waiting for people to get on and off. Just check the scheldule to make sure you're not waiting at a bus stop forever. It's been a while, but I think you avoid a lot of traffic by bus too because they can use bus lanes during rush hour (but that might be my memory playing tricks. I just remember thinking "Wow! Wasn't it soo smart to take the bus here!" last time I used one of them)

Renting a car is really expensive, and then you have to consider that fuel is more expensive than on the mainland too. Hitchhiking is illegal in the HI - and citations for pedestrian offenses are common, as a fellow travelblogger found out the hard way.

Edited to add: Looks like a monthly bus pass costs $60. Here's The Bus website.

Thanks for the tip on hitchhiking! I probably would not do that alone anyways...lone girl and all that...😊

I am from Alaska, so the price of gas is pretty comparable (and therefor my skin is somewhat thick in those regards). I am glad to know that the buses might be a pretty good way to go. I am just not sure if it would be more convenient or not to rent a car, specially if I could sleep in it. But, it might be good to meet people on the bus or at campgrounds.

Lots to contemplate. 😊 Reply to this

I lived on Oahu for about a year. But that was over 20 years ago, so I can't help much on prices. The bus is about the best you can do. And, if I remember correctly, the local transportation goes all the way around the island. Or did at the time. I think. Don't rent. That's too much. Then again, it's not that big of any island - you could walk it, if it weren't for the fact that a lot of the roads don't have a shoulder. lol Do not take the tour buses. Trust me. You'll never 'see' the island. A friend of mine that visited while I was working, as well as my brother, had a very hard time with those (both eventually ate the cost of a rental car). The city bus will get you there, and better.
I will tell you this - a single girl traveling over there, you want to camp at the camp grounds, not just out on the beach or something. Get a place with security to back you up. But there's some beautiful country out there, and a lot of places to see. One place I might go back to some day. That, and Kawaii. XD Reply to this
