My wife and I will fly into San Francisco, early September, rent a convertible and drive north flying home from Seattle. We have no time constraints. We will be staying in nice B&B's, small hotels, etc. We'd like to see it all. Need suggestions of the best spots to drive to. The "hey don't miss this" spots along or slightly out of the way. We're thinking 2-3 weeks.
Reply to this Oh, just saw you were going north from SF...too bad you miss Cambria. It is 3 hours south. But there are some adorable spots north of SF. If you want a quiet remote out of the way area, check out the coast near Inverness. Some cool B&Bs too. The wine country, Napa/Sonoma is gorgeous, and definitely full of cool places. I moved to Cambria 15 years ago from the SF area so my specifics are probably out of date. Have a blast! It is gorgeous. :-)

Reply to this My favorite spot along the Oregon coast is Brookings. By state law the entire Oregon coast is considered a public park so you can often find beachfront hotels where you would expect to find the private home of a very wealthy person. In Brookings try a jacuzzi room at the Best Western Oceanfront hotel (not the "Ocean View" hotel which is further from the beach). From a jacuzzi room you can open the sliding patio doors and feed the seagulls as they dive in. The waves are close enough to hit with a stone and are loud enough to keep you awake at night if you leave the door open.

Reply to this definatly Oregon coast and the sand dunes in Oregon, and the redwood forest in Northern California!! we missed that last trip and I'm kicking myself for it!
Reply to this There is a really remote beach up there called Abbot's Lagoon. It is a long hike to the water, but you will be amazed by the serenity. Hardly anyone ever there and quite remote. Near Inverness north of SF on the coast. That part of Highway one is a bit gnarly.

Reply to this I think we accidentaly wound up on that highway last year. Rented an automatic motorbike and zoomed across the golden gate (which was scary and incredible!) went to the viewpoint on the left side of the bridge right after you get off and continued down the road (twisty windy highway, looks like it's out of a car commercial), it just kept going to this tiny little beach where I think there was a small little town, can't be sure though, we would have kept going except it was getting dark!! this was a fun part of San Fran though!! def. worth checking out.
Reply to this Yeah, going north isn't as bad, coming back to SF is frightening on that stretch near Stinson Beach.
