Need emergency medical help on DEath Road, Bolivia

Friend is in Bolivia and took a ride on the Death Road over the last 2 days. She is seriously injured and still up in the small towns in the mountains between LA Paz and Coroico Need your insight and specific help to get her back to US immediately. Do not ask me questions about what is wrong, I need direct emergency names and numbers and a driver to get her out of there immediately....thanks. This is FOR REAL. Matt Stahl

Hello Matt

Does your friend have travel medical insurance, that includes evacuation? If so, contact the insurance company immediately. They are generally very good with emergencies. Which insurance company is it? If your friend is not able to tell you, search in her moneybelt or wherever she keep her important documents for the information about her her insurance policy. They can send an air ambulance if necessary. You really need to make sure you contact the insurance company, because evacuations cost horrendous amounts of money. It can be to the sum of over 100,000 dollars.

Anyway, keep us posted if you can, and hopefully anyone who can provide information will do so on this thread.

If you know her email password, look in her email too. If she has an insurance policy, there will likely be emails in there about it. Reply to this

Thanks Mell, we are trying everything we can from Chicago to get help to her. She has already received some medical help. Her friend slid 1600 feet down the side and had to be airlifted out. We're checking her insurance , etc....thanks again!!!! ANy other help from anyone that knows the Death Road and surroundings would be greatly appreciated. We've located her but still need advice about a driver, medical transport , etc...

Get in touch with Gravity bike tours (search their website in google). They have drivers and go down the road every day and they have rescue equipment are very responsible and have an american working there. They are very very helpful and will help anyone in need or they will advise you im sure.

The clinica del sur in la paz is very very good. I fell off there in June and broke my arms.
I really hope you can get the help. Reply to this

Thank goodness for that! And thank goodness she has a friend like you doing everything you can. What a terrible thing to happen though. I hope her parents are coping OK. I would be worried sick, if this was my daughter 😊

Sounds like things are under control now Matt. Best of luck to your friend. She'll get good care in La Paz and will be returned to the USA promptly. Very helpless feeling being so far away and unable to do anything.

I used to work for Foreign Affairs in Canada and I would get 6 to 7 frantic calls a day from family/friends who had a loved one in a foreign country injured/jailed/dead. The embassies are pros at this type of thing, and as long as she has proper international insurance, things should go well.

All the best. Reply to this

This is a reminder to us all that travel insurance is not "just another expense".It is ,in my opinion, the most important part of buying tickets.I'd happily sit in a box being towed behind the plane ,if it gets me where I'm going, but I ALWAYS buy the best insurance.
