Hi all,

Me and my Boyf are planning on going away from JUly 21st until August the 11th 2010. We originally planned on Thailand after speaking to friends who had been etc.

The problem is i read an article about South Africa in a magazine and it got me hooked - ive starting looking into things to do - costs etc and getting around and im not sure if its a better option than Thailand??

What we are after from our travels - Activities: i.e MTB, Hiking, Surfing, Trekking, and of course lazing around doing nothing!

The accommodation in SA seems pretty high to me? Dorms ranging from £10 per person to £40 in some places - whereas in Thailand you seem to get alot more for your money??

Has anybody been to both? Pros and Cons? Also does anybody recommend another place to travel to for our first time??

Im well aware the World Cup is on in SA this summer but its all over by the time we plan to go away - so hopefully it wouldnt affect us??

Hope you can help!

Many Thanks

Hello Katy 😊

Also does anybody recommend another place to travel to for our first time??

Wouldnt more suggestions just increase your indecision? 😉 Oh, OK then, my favourite of the 40+ countries I have been to is India.

I would go to the country that is looking the most enticing to you, even it if it is more expensive. Well, that is what I usually do. Maybe you can just avoid the place where the world cup is happening. The crowds and the disadvantage that goes with them, will likely just stay in one city.

Hi Mel,
I live in SA and we are moving to Thailand as soon as our properties are sold here. We were in Thailand for holiday in 2008 and absulutely loved it! I would not even think twice about where to go, my vote is Thailand! Even though you will be coming after the world cup, the hospitality trade is still gonna rip you off! And not even to think of the crime here.... wich is one of the reasons we are leaving. Don't get me wrong, we have a beautiful country here and I am sad to go, but one have to think of your future.. ust one of thos things! Thailand is just as beautiful, more tropical, and I found the people friendlier....
google it a bit and see for yourself! I would like to know your end decision!!!
Keep in thouch!!

Well i agree with mel.

India is my favorite too, in fact i am in India these days enjoying winters of Himachal Pradesh.

The vast variety of cultures and languages across the country is what attract me to the most.

Visit India to explore what you have never seen before and not to forget "lazing around" haha :D Reply to this

Thanks everybody for your posts. I have emailed a few hostels about
availability when we want to go to south Africa and they
have replied with some interestting quotes!! Let's just your right
the world cup might be over but the prices will remain high
this summer I think?
So we have decided to venture to thailand!! The plan is to
fly to Bangkok then stay there a couple of days the fly to Surat
thani and visit koh samui Et. There is a halfmoon party on
my bday so we will go there. Would like to visit phi phi for
the surf?? We are away for 20 days in total. Is there anything
that you reccommend doing or seeing whilst we are there??

I suggest you to make your trip to Thailand.

I have just come from Thailand tour. My trip to Phi Phi Islands was wonderful.

From Phuket you have to take boat it will take hardly 50 minutes to reach there. You will get shocked when you hear the hotels rate. It’s very low!

For travelling you can use "Ferry".

Bar here are open as long as they have customer it means you can enjoy whole night.

Major Attractions are:

Phi Phi Ley Bay - 19kms
Bamboo Island - 6kms
Mosquito Island - 7kms
Viking Cave - 15kms
Maya Bay - 22kms
