I have wanted to travel central america for as long as i can remember. i am a 24 year old girl who is currently travelling canada and has backpacked around the states. My next destination is Central America. but now the time to leave canada has come i am getting a little nervous. i have done alot of research and read up alot about these countrys so i feel i am not going with a blind eye, although i am also wondering if i am being over confident in travelling alone through these areas.

Please any advice from people doing this or have done this would be great.

i have loked into doing tours of these areas but feel i am missing alot doing a tour, does anyone know any good tour companys that do this continent in detail.

any help or comments are welcome, i want to hear it all!

Hello Courtney 😊

I have travelled a few times in C and S America alone. No need for a tour. Some common sense and being informed(the research you have done) will keep you safe unless you get very unlucky.

Things like getting drunk, taking drugs, wandering around the streets at night, not being careful about whose company you keep are the main things that put women travellers in danger.

Last time I was in C. America walking outside urban areas was dangerous because there were a lot of robberies. So, maybe that is also still to be avoided. Take a bus or horse instead to get from village to village.

And ignore any cat calls and comments from men and boys. That is something that is likely to happen a lot, and best ignored or if they ask if you want company, just say no thanks. This harassment rarely gets worse than verbal. Might be an idea to avoid wearing things like hot pants, and instead wear ''nice girl'' clothes.

Hello

I travelled alone in South America and felt very safe. Im sure Central America will be the same. I think its a matter of being aware and taking sensible precautions. You meet many like minded travellers and friendly locals along the way. Happy travels, Dawn.

Yes, you can do it. And you are certainly not the first. Have fun, and if you have time, come back and tell us about it. 😊 Reply to this

As a single woman you are fair game for any man. Mexican men will tell you this and I know that they figure if your not with a boytoy or husband, you are available, you are fair game. Some will try almost anything to bed you. My clients used to buy plain silver bands to wear as a wedding band, to keep the people guessing.
If you are a little worried, just tell people you are waiting for your fiance to arrive. In Afghanistan 30 years ago my wife had to wear a head covering like the locals, so she would not be viewed as slutlike. Don't wear revealing tops and other than when it is too hot keep shorts to a minimum. The more covered you are the less attention you will receive. Reply to this
