Hello Carole,
Since you plan on being in India during December, I would suggest being in Goa for Xmas and New Years, its thronging with tourists then owing to the season however its spectacular too with beach beds, the vivid display of fish outside all restaurants and the fireworks on the beach on New years is fantastic.
Would request you to book your travel and accommodation at the earliest to Goa bcoz it becomes quite steep closer to December.
From Goa, you could travel to Humpi, a village in northern Karnataka state. Its a UNESCO World Heritage Site and absolutely worth a visit with its extensive rock hewn landscape and the carved temple ruins.
If you are looking at a quiet beachy place, you could head to Gokarna in Karnataka again or head toward Mysore. Mysore is called the City of Palaces because of the number of palaces situated in the city - so, if you are keen on architecture and history - its quite a nice place to visit.
From Mysore you can head to Ooty in Tamil Nadu - its the capital of Nilgiris district situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. You should opt for the mountain train journey from Mettupalayam (a train station, closest to Ooty) Its a four and a half hours journey; the train twist and blends through 13 tunnels; you can see the tea plantations, green hills and rice fields. From Ooty you could travel onto Coonoor and Coonoor to Coimbatore (all in Tamil Nadu). Coimbatore is a major textile and engineering hub of India.
Using the Palakkad Gap you can reach Ernakulam in Kerala. Ernakulam is an urban place and youd be connected to most cities in Kerala from here. You should take a trip on the Kerala backwaters, there are house boats that you could travel onto various destinations.
Two other destinations in Kerala worth visiting are Thekkady - its the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary its home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs - and Kanyakumari - its the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula and you can see the confluence of Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.
A bus or train from Kanyakumari would take you to Chennai and after you visit Chennai, you could visit Pondicherry. It is a former French colony on the sea side with Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville. You could also visit Mahabalipuram, the monuments here are mostly rock-cut and monolithic. Chennai to Pondicherry is a 2 - 2.5 hour drive, so once you
e back you can fly straight to Delhi. If you book your tickets in advance, you should get an airfare for approx 3,000 INR.
Suragh has mentioned the places you can visit on North India, so that should cover all important places in your first visit.
Also, do goolge up these places, so you may add or omit any of these destinations based on personal choice.
Have a good trip!
