Planning for my BIG trip - NEED Help and Advice

Well, I\'m finally making the plunge and taking some time to go out and travel to places I have always wanted to go. Please let me know what you think of my itineary. Also, what is a good budget with and without flights. Any advice on visas would also be helpful. I would like to get as many of the visas before hand (I live in washington, DC), but know that some may expire before I even set foot in the country. I am usually a big planner, but I want to kinda go with the flow as much as I can for this trip. Okay, so here is what I am thinking.

Nepal 2 weeks to a month (April)
fly to Bangkok
Thailand - couple days to unwind in Bangkok and get visa to Myanmar
fly to Myanmar
Myanmar 28 days (May)
fly back to Bangkok
Thailand - explore North 2 weeks
overland to Laos
Laos for 30 days (June)
overland to Cambodia
Cambodia for 30 days (July)
Overland to Vietnam
Vietnam for 30-60 days (Can I get a 3 month multi visa before I leave?) (Aug)
Fly to China
China 1 to 2 months (Sept/Oct)

I know I will be in some of these places during rainy season, but heard it isn't that bad.

There is the basic plan. Any advice/suggestions about planning, itineary, visas etc would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

It sounds like a good trip. My initial reaction is to the Vietnam part of the itinary. You have planned one day for each place - and there is no travel time incorporated into this. Nha Trang to Hoi An will be about 8 hours. Hue to Ninh Binh about the same.....You haven't given yourself any time to see these places, just to travel in, sleep and move on again.

I'm sure that this is a vague itinary right now, and liable to change. Personally I would go with the flow alot more as you say above, and just have an idea of which places you want to see in each country and take it as you go....

As for visas...you can get the Laos and Cambodian visas on the border when you go into the country. You can get the Vietnam visa at any Vietnam embassy in any of the capitals you visit before you get here. Travel agents in most hotels and tourist areas can also arrange these for you. For the SE Asia part of your trip, I wouldn't buy the visas from home as they are liable to run out before you even get here, and that will be a complete waste of money.

Hope this helps.

Hello Brian 😊

That is quite a plan! Looks good to me.

I know I will be in some of these places during rainy season, but heard it isn\'t that bad.

True.

I think the Indian and Chinese visas are the only important ones to get before you leave the US. I dont know anything about the visa for Nepal though. But, I think you will pick up all the other visas easily enough in Thailand. About the Chinese visa: I dont know what the latest regulations are, but before you get it check condiontions such as if it starts from date of issue or from date you enter China etc.

I know you had questions about Visas and as Americans it is not easy. I was in this part of the world this time last year and most of our visas were easy. Cambodia and Laos were purchased on arrival at the border. We got our Vietnam visa at the Vietnam embassy in Hong Kong before heading into Vietnam. I'm pretty sure we needed our visa before we arrived because (at least at our border crossing from China, there was no place to purchase a visa). It only took us a few hours in Hong Kong, but we did have to pay for them to express it. Otherwise it would have taken weeks so I think that is a price that you might end up having to pay. For China, you must get your visa prior to arrival and I am pretty sure it has to be done in your home country. We were able to get a 60 day multiple entry visa which was pretty unheard of at the time and we were lucky to get it. The mulitple entry is necessary if you want to go to Hong Kong or Macau and then back into China. Good luck and if you have any other questions you can message me. Reply to this
