Travelling in China in February

Is it worth travelling in China in February or is it too cold? We will be starting in Beijing at the beginning of Feb and making our way down to Hong Kong via Xian.

My boyfriend will be travelling China and South East Asia for around 4months at the beginning of next year,we both need to be back on the UK by June so in order to fit in all that we want to do we need to arrive in China in Feb. I know that it gets really cold in northern China especially during the winter and was wondering if anyone had any experience of travelling in China in the winter and whether they would recommend it or is it too cold? The furthest north we will be going is Beijing and this is where we are planning on arriving at the beginning of Feb. Would it be feasible to bring lots of coats and warm clothes and then post them back home when we know longer need them? Any input will be much appreciated! Reply to this

Yes, the climate in Northern China is grim in winter, not to say impossible for travel but sometimes far from pleasant. I guess it is up to you if you fell you want to endure it or not, if you think the European winterslog gets tiresome then perhaps you should think twice. I've been to Beijing three times in January, not much snow, but each time it was a windy and miserably cold place though there were some nice and blue sky days inbetween. The wind really gets to you so dress accordingly.

As for sending clothes home I have no idea about the cost, if you are really gung-ho you can also try buying them along the road. A word of warning though, I've been to one of those outlet-style markets in Beijing and you'll get quoted insane prices because you are a foreigner. If you can bargain it down to 10-20% you won't get robbed. 😉 Reply to this

Thanks for your help grantcorp, at the moment I think we are going to brave it, we are only planning to spend a couple of weeks in China and seeing China in the freezing cold is better than not seeing it at all! Reply to this

China post express:
First 500g, 220-280 yuan, (document 220yuan, others 280yuan)
then 75 yuan/500g.

I think those costs are for air post. If there is no hurry you can send it by boat, taking about 1.5 months, costing about 140 yuan for the first kg, then 14 yuan/kg

Buying warm clothing you can just as well do in Beijing. They've always been eager to sell fake The NorthFace and Columbia double coats to foreigners, and their latest fashion is fake Peak Performance coats. Bottom price is 130yuan, but expect to pay 150.

or 200 if you're a brainless Yankee. Which you're not...
